Hi
Probably missing something stupid... WSPR and PSK etc did not show any output when transmitting... (they used too)... After 'messing around' I got a signal out by cranking up CMP from 7 to 24... this seems to me to be the 'wrong' way ? Advise appreciated (including manual reference if I have missed it) thanks and 73 John VE3NFK |

Hi John,
If you are able to turn up the compression to something other than zero you are obviously using an SSB mode. You really want to use DATA MODE A. In that mode the K3 really makes digital modes easy because it turns off features that you should not be using and it makes the front panel MIC potentiometer the quick and easy way to adjust your input level. While transmitting (either on the air or in TEST MODE) you would turn the pot until you see 4 or 5 steady bars on the ALC display with the next bar blinking. If this doesn't do the trick then you are either not bringing the audio into the LINE IN connector on the back of the K3 or your PC line output needs to be cranked up using the audio control panel. 73, Mike K2MK

Thanks Mike, Jim and Pete
all good input and will try them out after work today.... interesting that there are 2 different ways to achieve a working solution! (DATA-A, USB - making sure Mic select LIN IN and level right) 73 John VE3NFK |

John,
Also keep in mind you want to set the soundcard/line-in gain so that you are getting 4 bars of ALC and the 5th bar just flickering. This ensures the correct setting for the DSP to manage the power. It is not like other radios where you want NO ALC for PSK. 73 Greg AB7R On 7/26/12, VE3NFK <[hidden email]> wrote: > Thanks Mike, Jim and Pete > > all good input and will try them out after work today.... interesting that > there are 2 different ways to achieve a working solution! You might view it as two different routes to a solution, but the real
reason is to have a working solution for SSB (via Mic) AND a different one for Data. The Data selection disables equalization and compression for you so you don't have to remember to do it manually. I am constantly changing modes from CW to SSB to DATA, so having the appropriate levels/gains/presets for each is a real convenience. Hope you get things going soon! 73, Bob, WB4SON ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Thanks for the inputs....
Data-A works fine - but I like the convenience of USB ... tried setting line-in level appropriately - and it worked fine - for 1.5 hours (WSPR) THEN - back to no signal (I had it set with line level of 30 and CMP of 7)... when it 'failed' it would only work if I cranked up the CMP to 30 or so.... Question - 'why' has it worked fine for 'years' and now doesn't ? I can obviously use DATA-A - but I personally preferred not have to switch modes. 73 John VE3NFK |

sorry - audio output from sound device was '0' - don't know how that happened as I hadn't touched it - but everything is fine again (it was NOT the original problem tho' :-) )

Running compression with digimodes is generally a bad idea, as it can
distort the signal (depending on the modulation scheme). If you are going to use the USB mode on the KX3 for ditigal modes, you should set the CMP setting to '0', and adjust the PC output level/mic gain to get four steady bars on the "ALC meter", then set the power control to the desired level. You should also ensure that the MIC BIAS and MIC BTN menu items are set to "OFF". 73, Matt VK2ACL.
