Just out of curiosity (as I sit here revamping my station's power system), what
gauge and length is the power cable supplied with the K3? I see it has Power Poles installed on one end - is the other unterminated? Powerwerx (http://www.powerwerx.com/) sells an inexpensive tool for
locking the connector into its housing. This tool can also be used to remove a connector from the housing. I have one of the crimp tools sold by Powerwerx (http://www.powerwerx.com/product.asp?ProdID=3324&CtgID=1022) and it works much better than the less expensive tool also from that company. With the TRIcrimp, I get perfect crimps every time. Sometimes difficulty in getting the contact into the housing is caused by a slight bend in the contact (the less expensive crimper tended to do this) or a slight out of round in the crimped body of the contact. I have not so far soldered the contacts on, but do plead guilty to putting a ratchet tie around the figure eight cable just before it enters the housing and filling the void in the housing with hot glue and extending the hot glue up to the ratchet tie. The purpose is to prevent repeated bending of the cable near the contact. Maybe this is not good practice. I don't know. FWIW. Usual disclaimers. 73 Kevin VK3DAP / ZL2DAP Dave Martin wrote: >> Oh No! Then you can spend the $50 for the tool and it's no big deal. I have one rig. I'm NOT going to spend $50 for a crimp tool to do 2 connections. Yet, crimping is the right way to do these. I soldered the ones for my K2/100 and will end up doing the same for those with the K3, all the time wishing they were crimped. Fellas:
SOLDERING, esp. when the wire size closely approximates the inner diameter of the APP contact pin, works JUST GREAT! Don't sweat the high-dollar crimper. NOT REQ. Just do a creditable job of soldering. 73, Tom N0SS At 06:45 10/24/2007, Darwin, Keith wrote: > > >-----Original Message----- >Oh No! but.. the K3 is a no solder kit! Sorry...
I converted my shack and a couple op positions at our club shack to APP's - soldered dozens of them, works great. One tip: make sure of the orientation of the connector pins before soldering especially on heavy gauge wire. This can be a bit tricky as the pin will want to rotate on the wire as soon as you touch it with the soldering iron (Murphy at work). It's important so you don't have to twist the conductor to get the pin into the connector. Also the little APP insertion tool is quite handy for small gauge wire. So now we know, there are two solder connections on the K3 kit! Unless I'm mistaken, aren't the PPs on the the cable when you receive it
anyway (I don't remember seeing anything about assembling them in the manual)? I confirm soldering works great, just be careful to get a good flow of molten solder, but not enough to run out of the contact end and onto the actual wiping contact. For what its worth, I have converted all my 12v power to use PPs, I even took the Molex connector off the Yaesu FT-857 and replaced with PP (why didn't I do what a lot of people have done and put PPs on the fly lead? Because the Molex connector had an intermittent connection, not to mention it being about twice the size). To this end, I bought a West Mountain Pro crimper from Quicksilver Radio Products (http://www.qsradio.com/, I found them to be very good) because I had so many to do. I use Power Poles for all my 12 volt gear: radio power, chargers, other
electronic gadgets, and have always soldered the pins on. I have never had a failure in years of using them. One small benefit of soldering, for those of us cheapskates, is that they can be used again for other purposes. Just release from the plastic housing with a jeweler's screwdriver, unsolder, and resolder onto another application. I use the same little screwdriver to push the pin into the housing, but watch your fingers! The other end of the wire is a gold-plated pin that plugs into its mating socket on the KANT3 or KAT3. 73, Ed - W0YK _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The K3 kit provides the parts for the builder to fabricate the same thing. The other end of the cable in both cases is unterminated. 73, Ed - W0YK _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. There are a number of places that sell complete cables with Power

I've got my K3 (#22) and the power cable is a kit. BTW, the radio is built and tested, after a minor problem, and the radio project for the day is update the firmware and clear a space for it at the operating position. I'm also working on memorizing the manual. But I have too many projects, and I want to take advantage of the good weather for outside stuff. 73, doug _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
