Hi Don,
Thank you for the SSCW contact this past weekend. I
believe you were the one who told me I had a chirp. (If not, I am sorry to have
burdened you with this).
After the report, I immediately switched from my K3
to a K2 and finished the contest. I was using N3FJP software to key the K3 as
well as a paddle for keying the K3 keyer. Can you tell me how bad the chirp was?
I have had two other reports like this during contests - even the QRP ARCI at 5
watts. It seems it comes on after I have used the K3 for a substantial amount of
time. I contacted Elecraft support and they suggested some things to check out,
but it is very difficult to do when the radio works fine most of the time. I set
it up here with a loop from the logging program and let it run into a dummy load
for over an hour with no change. I may have to send it back to them for their
analysis.
Anyway, I finished the contest with 706 Qs in 77 sections
(no ND, NL, NT) for a score of 100K+. Sure is a fun contest. I really enjoy the
K3, but the K2 is still a very good radio for CW contests also. I made 357 Qs
with the K3 and 349 with the K2.
Thanks and best regards.

Hi Dick,
Well - I didn't want to complain, but I will provide feedback to a station that may know about the unique sound (homebrew gear), or may not know that something unusual is going on with the station. I gave you the 589C and later keyed "chirp" because it's the only word I know of to describe an unusual condition on transmitted cw. With analog radios there are fewer sounds that are made from an out of spec transmitter, your signal was certainly not chirp as in the traditional sense. (bwop bip bwop bip). I also had one report of "bad keying" myself over the weekend, but my secondary receiver revealed nothing unusual and the next few contacts my "sig ok?" was answered positive so I kept operating. I've replied to the list in case anyone else might be interested. Great job on the qso counts - I enjoyed 200 contacts on 20m - S & P - but never send in my log. Thanks, Don wb8yqj Hi Don, Well, seems I sent my message for you to the reflector. Here it is again. Thank you for the SSCW contact this past weekend. Howdy Guys,
I am having some difficulty getting DXBase to talk to my brand new K3. I have been assured that if you select the K2 as the radio selection, this will work. The radio talks to my computer because I can do the updates. All of the parameters match for the radio, the com (6) and DXBase. I have made a couple of calls to tech support for Elecraft and they haven't gotten back to me. My radio has the newest updates (even newer than the ones that are available on the site.) Anyone have this kind of problem getting DXBase to talk to the computer/K3? Bill,
Check the data rates for both the K3, the software and your com port - The program may be trying to run at 4800 since you have selected "K2" while the K3 is set for a different rate. Note: the K3 Utility program can set the K3 for the baud rate that it wants to use, but the K3 itself does not do automatic baud rate adjustment. 73, Don W3FPR Bill Parry wrote: > Howdy Guys, > > I am having some difficulty getting DXBase to talk to my brand new K3. You do not need those lines high, indeed I would not recommend it as
these lines can be enabled on the K3 as PTT/Keying lines. In this case having these lines high will place the K3 in transmit I have a k3 update that you can add to the radios.ini file for explicit K3 support in dXbase but it is functionally the same as the k2 file for now 73 Brendan EI6IZ On Tue, 2008-11-04 at 11:53 -0800, Tony Morgan wrote: > Should have added > RTS high > DTR high > > 73, > > Tony W7GO > _______________________________________________ > Elecraft mailing list > Post to: [hidden email] > You must be a subscriber to post to the list. > Subscriber Info (Addr. Thanks to all that responded.
+The manual said specifically not check DTR and RTS, so I did not. I tried to check them and it made no difference. +The radio, the comport (6) and DXBase are all set to 4800 baud. I have not tried to use the 38,400 baud setting, but I have had more than one person say that the 4800 does work. If I was more knowledgeable, I could be a little more specific. (Maybe I should call the Geek Squad :-) Brendan, I believe that you sent the update for radio.ini but I didn't want to add another variable to a situation that I am at a loss how to fix. Bill,
If you are using a USB to serial adapter, try setting the speed as high as you can - it is counterintuitive, but many adapters have problems at low speeds but work fine at higher speeds. Again make sure everything is set for the same speed. If you possibly can, try using a real serial port, at least as a trial. 73, Don W3FPR Bill Parry wrote: > Thanks to all that responded. > > +The manual said specifically not check DTR and RTS, so I did not.
