Lyle, Amidst all the technical questions:
What all in the way of "filters" would you suggest would be necessary for a K3 set up primarily for DXing? As far as roofing filters are concerned, the next closest DXer to my qth is probably in the neighborhood of 100 miles, so no close by strong signals anyway. I am trying to plan my oder form of course. I intend to get the 100w version and the atu. My question is primarily about the kind and number of filters for options. Thanks for any input. 73, Mike k5nu K2#381 K1#64 _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. SSB op? Data modes guy? The radio comes with a 2.7 kHz 5-pole filter. If you are into wider SSB or AM, you'd want the 6 kHz filter. I suggest a 400 Hz or 500 Hz CW filter if you are likely to get into a situation where there are a LOT of really strong signals nearby, for CW/Data mode work. I've not ordered any extra filters (yet) for SSB/CW because I am waiting to see what the differences, apart from poles and bandwidth, are between the various filters (and the variable bandwidth versions). We kept the K3 physically small make it very portable, especially when you compare it to other elite-class radios. > Any figures on current draw yet??? Just wondering about portable > ops...perhaps my K2 will still be tops for portable/battery use. Rx current is under 1 A. Not in the K2 class, but reasonable for many portable situations. The K2 remains an excellent choice for many purposes. Its small size and careful attention to details specifically to support operation from an internal battery keep it in a class of its own. Personally, I'm keeping my K2 in addition to my K3! I'll be operating my K3 at W7S (Salmoncon) as a battery-powered radio with a Buddipole antenna system the weekend of July 6-9. And using the internal PSK encoder and decoder to use this mode without a laptop or other attached computer :-) 73, Lyle KK7P _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Note that the K3 as displayed has NO provision for an internal battery. OTOH, there's enough empty space in a barebones model to fashion a new top cover with a battery holder. And I note that apparently credit can be given for the basic 2.7k 5 pole roofing filter if you want to replace it with the 8 pole 2.8k filter on original shipment. There do seem to be some obvious opportunities for us high-duty cycle RTTY ops to improve final cooling, IIF it should be deemed necessary. 73, doug _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi Doug,
Doug Faunt wrote: > > Note that the K3 as displayed has NO provision for an internal battery. > OTOH, there's enough empty space in a barebones model to fashion a new > top cover with a battery holder. It would take a pretty serious battery to power the K3, given a typical minimum RX-mode current drain of 0.8 to 0.9 A. With a subreceiver installed, there may just be room for 10 C cells, broken into two 4-cell packs. I'm hoping to offer an enclosed [safe!] fuel cell as an internal option someday ;) > > > There do seem to be some obvious opportunities for us high-duty > cycle RTTY ops to improve final cooling, IIF it should be deemed > necessary. The K3 has two large, quiet fans on the 100-W compartment. They are of a standard size (HxW), and if necessary, they could be replaced with much deeper units, thus avoiding the aesthetic compromise from adding fans on top of the box. That shouldn't be necessary. We haven't determined final duty cycle ratings, but given the larger fans and larger heat sink, I'm expecting it to come in higher than the K2/100. 73 Wayne --- http://www.elecraft.com _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Will the fuel cell option come with the hovercraft-mobile mounting kit?

No, but it will come with a wrist strap mount for the K3. At only 8
pounds, wrist-mounting of the rig won't kill you (like our 55-pound competitors), but it'll still give you a great upper-body workout :) Wayne Leigh L Klotz, Jr. wrote: > Will the fuel cell option come with the hovercraft-mobile mounting > kit? Here are some ideas I read about, a long time ago: 1) Bring purchase home in trunk of car. Under cover of darkness, move purchase from car to basement window well. Open basement window and bring purchase inside. (Only works with basement shacks near openable windows) 2) Keep large trash can in basement. Make a big show of how much useless stuff you are getting rid of each trash day. Bring purchase home in trunk of car. Under cover of darkness, after trash day, while retrieving empty can, put purchase into can and bring into basement. (Only works with basement shacks) 3) Mail parts and small purchases to yourself, with computer-made official-looking labels from ham rig makers. Labels should say "FREE SAMPLE" and "FOR EVALUATION BY (your call)". Helps to include official- looking questionnaire and return envelope. (Only works with small items in new condition) 4) Dismantle purchase at friend's house. Bring parts into house using various methods listed above. Mix in with parts stock, which must be big enough that additions are undetectable. Reassemble gradually so it takes shape slowly and is not noticed. "And I built it myself from parts I had on hand". (Works best with kits and homebrew that need restoring anyway). 5) Sell 3 or 4 big things that you don't use and which are virtually worthless, in order to buy one thing you really want. Helps to have lots of useless big things around for such deals. 6) Deny, deny, deny. "That? I've always had that. Got it at the Podunk Hollow hamfest in 1998. Cost over $700 new, I got a deal for less than $50. You just never noticed it before." 7) Ham friend comes over, drops purchase off at your house. Says he's moving, vacationing, having work done to his house, etc., and would you hold onto the thing "for a while" so it won't get dirty, lost or damaged? (Works best if ham friend does you, or better yet 'hon', a bunch of non-ham-radio favors, so you owe him several favors back, and can't refuse him. Meanwhile you've done the same things for *him*, so he can do the same deal.) The following three can only be used once, so save them for that dream purchase. 8) If you only have permission to buy one thing, but want two things, have "radio store" (ham friend) send you both. Call "radio store" on phone and complain about second item sent to you "by mistake". Spend a lot of time on phone trying to convince them it's *their* mistake, that you refuse to pay for the item, it's not on your credit-card bill, etc. Finally have "radio store" send you official-looking apology letter saying they're sorry, they discovered the mistake, and you can just keep the second item for free as a goodwill gesture from them. (Helps to practice one- sided phone conversations by listening to old Bob Newhart routines). 9) Bring purchase into house when no one is home. Wrap up in unlabeled, dusty, old, cardboard box. Hide in unusual place, away from your ham gear - attic if shack is in basement, garage, etc. Bury it under stuff that hasn't been disturbed in a long time, and won't be normally moved. After a suitable time has elapsed, get family to do "housecleaning". Best if someone else discovers box. You act surprised, overjoyed, cradle unit in your arms, tell family you thought it was lost years ago and you thought it was gone forever, you'd never see it again, etc. Long detailed story of how you delivered papers for three years to save up for it helps. (Only works with old items that you could have once owned). 10) Go to hamfest. Don't buy a thing (officially) - better yet, sell a bunch of stuff. Leave early. That night, receive phone call from excited ham friend telling you that you won the grand prize in the doorprize/raffle. Pick up "grand prize" (your purchase) at his house - which you dropped off there on the way home. (Only works with new items. Mad scramble looking for raffle ticket stubs in car, clothing, etc., with heroic rescue just before they go into the washing machine, helps divert attention). -- Not that I've actually *done* any of the above, mind you. Wouldn't dream of it. Not me! --- Just something I read somewhere - QST about 1970. Yeah, QST....that's the ticket. Yup, QST. 73 de Jim, N2EY No, really - there *was* such an article. > Now "Darling, where's that old K3 I put away in the attic in 1982?" 1) have the kit delivered somewhere else, e.g. your friendly garage; 2) throw away the original box and shipping documents; 3) liberally dust all the parts, and especially the front panel, with face powder; smear the transparent parts with paper glue, simulating scratches (not a permanent damage but very convincing); 4) try to remove the face dust using a piece of waste, thus leaving a lot of fine lines along all the corners (best way to have something new looking years old; good for customs too) 5) take the manual and thumb it a lot with well dirty and greasy hands; 6) mark around many of the manual's pages with a lot of tick marks, arrows, and so on; 7) trample on it, and half-tear the schematic diagram pages; 8) throw all parts together in a big, ugly, well beaten grocery carton box; 9) on a Saturday morning, have a friendly OM calling you, announcing the death of some OM down there at just 15 miles away, and suggesting a visit to the garage auction his wife is already, hastily organizing while the poor boy is still warm in the coffin; 10) come home with the old box, wires dangling all around and a BIG smile on your face, all the while congratulating yourself for your sheer luck in recognizing some useful half-done kit buried in that garbage; 11) mount the kit but leave out some parts of the case; blame the deceased and his stupid wife for having lost those parts (this will be the real finest of the tricks); 12) after a LOOOONG while, finish the kit but leave the face powder in place, so the last panels (previously washed and lightly oiled) will look slightly different. I did it a couple of times, and wife never found the trick. Maybe you shall inform all visiting OM not to give you away... Ok well if you have a wife like mine. None of this will work.
For a while, I use to be able to get away with storing gear in the basement and bring it ups a month or two later. She would say, "is that new?" and I would say no I've had that for along time. I just moved things around. My wife is a smart cookie so now she takes digital pics of my shack and gear in the basement so last time I tried that, she brought up the time date pics and I was busted. But she's a great gal and usually lets me get what I want.
