K3

Mike K5NU
Elecrafters,

I have just written a long email to the reflector, and then deleted it.  I
did you a favor. hi  I will keep my opinion to myself.  However, I know that
scopes, skimmers, computers, etc. are an integral part of the hobby in 2010.
However, I find that - just as in the past 50 years - my favorite operating
position is sitting at the desk at night with my forehead on the desk, my
eyes closed, my fingers on the vfo dial, slowly tuning across 80 meters
listening for the weak dx signal calling cq.  The fun of finding a rare one
before he is spotted has kept my interest/fun level up for half a century.
I operated PSK for a few days, and bought an SDR-1000 and used it a few
times.  Gazing at a computer screen and/or operaing a radio with a mouse
inspired me not at all.

Give me my K3 in diversity rx mode, NR at 1-4 on cw, NB on, RF back a bit, a
pad for my forehead, and I'm set.  Keep in mind this is coming from an old
dinosaur with a very small brain.

Ham radio is way too much fun.

73, Mike K5NU

I haven't used the CW Skimmer for long, but so far I have noticed that when the signals are in the noise, just like any other decoder, it doesn't work as good as a pair of ears feeding a human brain.

Skimmer is a tool, but it has limitations. If you want the really weak ones, the PC isn't going to help at all.

I personaly like using the knobs myself, and even when the PC is connected, I use the knobs on the K3 for most functions.

I don't think using a computer with a rig is so wonderful that it makes operating a stand-alone radio obsolete. I enjoy tuning the bands without a PC. But I also enjoy the tools, when I want to use them.

There is no right or wrong way. Some hams like 1500w amps. High power for me is 200w from the Mark-V. I enjoy using 5w and lower if it will work.

For me it's all good. The K1 into a wire in a tree, or the PC running lots of software with the K3.

It's really about different strokes for different folks. But it's all good.

Oh...I don't know about that....Surely it's more inspirational to tweak a
cat whisker on the crystal :*)
