K3: updates of firmware

W6ODJ
There have been a spate of anomalies reported after uploading new
firmware to the K3.  Maybe these could be avoided by using the
following procedure:

(1)  First, BEFORE any change of firmware, use the K3 utility to save
a copy of your settings.

(2)  Now do the upload of new firmware to the K3

(3)  Now reset the K3.  (Turn K3 off;  press the SHIFT/LO knob in
until it clicks and hold it there; turn the K3 on; after 2 seconds,
release the SHIFT/LO knob.  See page 63 of Owner's Manual)

(4)  Now use the K3 utility to restore your K3 settings from the copy
you saved in step 1.

The K3 is, among many other things, a computer.  A reboot can be a
good thing.

Oliver:
Of course that procedure will work but I've done updates on my K3 for over a
year without a hitch. My recomendation is to start the update and don't mess
with the computer until it's totally done. SIT ON YOUR HANDS....
One big problem is the K3 makes you think it's done because you hear band
noise and then it starts updating again. Maybe Elecraft can figure out a way
for the display to say PLEASE WAIT.
