K3 utility on Xubuntu 11.10 .. help needed

k5oai
I need some help from a linux guru to get the K3 Utility working.
I am running Xubuntu 11.10 64bit.
I downloaded and expanded the k3utility_1_4_1_8.tgz from
http://www.elecraft.com/K3/software/k3utility_1_4_1_8.tgz

when I tried to run the k3util using the command:
./k3util from my /home/<user> directory
I see the error saying it can't find libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0

searching what package contains this missing file using this page:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=oneiric&arch=amd64&mode=filename&searchon=contents&keywords=libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0

the results say:
You have searched for filenames that contain libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 in suite
oneiric, all sections, and architecture(s) amd64. Found 5 results.
File
/usr/lib/debug/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.2400.6
can be found in Package libgtk2.0-0-dbg

File
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
can be found in Package libgtk2.0-0

File
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.2400.6
can be found in Package libgtk2.0-0

File
/usr/lib32/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
can be found in Package ia32-libs

File
/usr/lib32/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.2400.6
can be found in Package ia32-libs

I'm in windows7 right now so,
I can't immediately try installing any of those packages
earlier today, I already tried installing the libgtk2.0-0 package
got a message that it was already installed on the machine
but afterwards I was still unable to locate the needed
libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 file anywhere on the machine

since my linux skills are quite rusty, my question is:
when I do get the missing ibgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 file installed
I think, I will also need to create a sys link in the directory where the
libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 gets installed to the directory where the
k3util expects to find it, some thing like
ln -s /usr/something/something /usr/something/something_else

as you can see I definatly need some degree of elmering with this
so please contact me off list and I will post a summation reply
when I get this ironed out and working

TIA

This is probably because the binary is 32-bit and you're on a 64-bit distro.

This is what you want. It's the 32-bit version of the library, purely
for the purpose of letting you run 32-bit applications on your 64-bit
system.

Right, you already have the 64-bit version installed (lots of stuff
wouldn't work if you didn't).

Nope, just installing the ia32-libs package should do everything you need.

Hopefully you don't mind an on-list reply as I can imagine other folks
might've hit the same problem!

Re: K3 utility on Xubuntu 11.10 .. help needed

k5oai
Thanks Dan,
that was exactly the info I needed. My delay in replying was due to some
problems with me and the small fonts in Xubuntu. I finally decided to
change to LinuxMint, which I found was easier for me to configure with
larger fonts. A bonus with Mint was the ia32-libs were already installed.
<g>
I tested the K3Util by installing the new k3fw4r48 which updated my MCU and
FPF.

(didn't even need to run it by using ./k3util just clicked on the icon)
Mint is showing a lot of promise... so far.
