K3 with 1000 Hz filter

Tony - KM0O
Hello everyone,

I've just been informed by Elecraft that my KRX3 will be ready to ship in a couple of weeks, and I need to decide on filters for it.

I'm wondering about the 1000Hz filter. Who out there is using it, and for what purposes, and what can you tell me about its performance?

K3 with 1000 Hz filter

I have the 1000 Hz filter Tony and find it useful for CW.  I also have the
500 Hz filter.  I operate mostly CW contests, and typically dial in a DSP BW
of 300 hz for search and pounce (500 hz filter activated) and a 600 hz BW
for running (1000 hz filter activated).  Another place where the 1000 hz
filter is quite handy is when using the dual PB feature for CW receive.

I am using the 1Khz filter.

It is my most used filter for CW, my primary mode of operation on HF.
My whole filter complement is 2.8KHz, 1Khz, 400Hz and 250Hz.  So for
all width settings between 1Khz and 400Hz, I use this filter.

Regarding efficacy, I only recently got the 1KHz filter.  Before
getting this filter, I would be using the 2.8Khz filter when I set the
width to 500Hz.  There was a larger difference in noise level between
400 and 500Hz, more that just the change in bandwidth would indicate.
I attributed this to having a wide roofing filter.  Now that is much
less the case.  This is purely subjective, with no electrical
measurements.  YMMV.

I have the 1000 cycle filter and use it for tuning through bands for CW signals.
If the band is quiet I leave it in but if the band has QRN or QRM I use the 400
cycle or 25 cycle.  It's a good filter and I find it works very well.

No scientific research here just my idea of what a good filter should sound like
and what it should be used for.

Hi Tony:

I recently added a 1kHz filter to my K3 (just in time for Field Day...).

When I'm contesting, I often try to use a semi-wide b/w filter, so I
can keep track of who is on either side of me AND so I can try to catch
those who can't seem to zero beat my calling frequency.

Before I added the 1kHz filter, I had only a 2.8kHz (SSB) filter which
was good, but it allowed to much 'crud' in from 'up above'... with the
1kHz filter I can now roll off a LOT of the upper RM and get down to the
business of copying what I was trying to copy in the first place.

I also have a 400Hz filter for those times when I need something a bit
more narrow, but I use the 1kHz a lot.
