First time I used the CM-500 headset in a contest. In the past I used a Heil
Pro headset. My ears were always sore after the test due to the pressure on
my ears. (Maybe it is my big head?)
One advantage of the CM-500 is that it doesn't put pressure on the ears.
Rather it surrounds the ears.
Using the TX Equalizer it was easy to taylor the pass band so the Yamaha
sounds just like the HC4 which is good for max penetration in a pileup.
Also you can have the mike farther from your mouth so that you can take a
drink while the KDVR3 is CQing. You don't have to push the mike out of the
way. A straw is a big help.
By the way I like to have the monitor level of the KDVR3 low so that I can
just hear the KDVR3 which gives my ears a break. I use N1MM for selecting
the 4 voice positions. I have the Monitor level higher when I am talking
because it helps to keep me from yelling when I am talking.
A little trick is to use a Kleenex tissue on each ear between the headset
and your ears. It makes it more comfortable when you have the headset on
most of the weekend, especially if it is warm.
The K3 I use at KP2M has 3 SSB filters - 2.7, 2.1, 1.5. After playing with
different settings I found that my best run rates were with settings of .35
(Low) and 2.35 (High). Not everyone who calls you is right on frequency and
you don't want to be tuning around when running (Is there anyway other than
running when your DX?).With these settings I could slide between stations
even on 20M and find a run frequency. When working DX at home things are
different so you can tighten the passband.
I had bad line noise this morning on 10M from a pole transformer which went
away this afternoon. Tried the NB (distorted signals unless turned off the
IF NB but then it wasn't effective)) and NR (covered weak signals even at
6-2). I found my ears were the best filter. This is where the Icom NR at a
low setting works well.
Made 7K Q's and 7M points with KP2M so it wasn't a bad weekend.
By the way being a single op I only run so I don't even have the K3 in front
of me. Other than selecting the run frequency I don't use the rig. Once I
change bands and find a run frequency I don't need any controls on the K3.
