I thought I would change the thread (title) a little.
I have been using my K3 on 500-KHz (running in the TEST mode) for several months. It is driving two buffer amps for 10mw to drive a surplus NDB xmtr (non-directional beacon) as a 100w linear amp and feeding a 43x130 foot inverted-L antenna. I have determined my noise floor is about --110 dBm (S3) with the K3 connected to the antenna. I use a Clifton Labs filter to reduce BC band signals to eliminate RF splatter on the 500-KHz band, but without the filter BC reception is very good. I have not done much SWL on HF but the few times I check WWV, reception seems to be equal the ham bands. 73, ED - KL7UW My 3.24w ERP signal has been heard 1366 miles on 500-KHz; I have heard CW from Buffalo, NY on 500-KHz. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Sun, 5 Sep 2010 12:21:32 -0400 From: Guy Olinger K2AV <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 RX Ant question To: Alan Price <[hidden email]> Cc: Elecraft <[hidden email]> Message-ID: <[hidden email]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 That sounds about right. "Make a difference" is a problematic understanding unless you are talking before and after installing. Once installed in your K3 RX the KBPF3 is invoked whenever you are listening on any frequency that requires it. So A/B testing is hard, unless you have the K3 opened up and are putting it in and taking it out making comparisons. The ham bands have pass band filters in use, and reception gradually diminishes tuning into the HF broadcast bands. Without the KBPF3, this diminishment is gradually heard, but is not hugely noticeable, say in the 40m commercial broadcast band, given the power levels some stations are running. The AM BC band IS severely attenuated by the K3 through main ant jack(s) without the KBPF3 and RX and jumps up quite a lot listening through the RX antenna and KBPF3. 73, Guy. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 ====================================== BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 144-QRT*, 432-100w, 1296-QRT*, 3400-fall 2010 DUBUS Magazine USA Rep [hidden email] ====================================== *temp ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
