K3 won't shut off?

Dr. William J. Schmidt, II
So I connected my PR6 - 6 meter preamp to my K3 for the first time last week
and work some DX.  At the end of the day I go to shut the radio off and the
display goes blank (hear the relays disengage) but all of the LEDs are still
lit on the radio. and it will not turn back on except to cycle the power on
the power supply.  I discuss this with a friend and he reminds me that there
was a MOD for K3's to put a diode on the KPA3 board for the 12V sense
circuit, but after looking at the MOD sheet on the Elecraft website, it says
that this MOD was incorporated into the radio as of 2009 (my radio less than
a year old).  I remove the fans to check for the 1N4148 on P68A of the KPA3
and it's not there.  So two questions. Has anyone else experienced this
phenomena, and does anyone know. was that diode actually incorporated into
the radio on the board somewhere else and mine is just bad?

Iain MacDonnell - N6ML-2
Does the K3 power off fully if you disconnect the ACC connector? It
sounds like something is pulling pin 8 down....

I cannot be certain, but I would expect the production would be of the
SMD variety rather than the discrete leaded diode that was used for the mod.

Yes, it works fine with the preamp completely removed...

Question

Milt -- N5IA
In reply to this post by Don Wilhelm-4
Don and the list,

This is my first time to need any guidance.  I appreciate in advance the
reply to my question.

The BNC connector for the AUX RF input has become loose on my K3.

I cannot determine the best manner of accessing the inside of the rear panel
so I can tighten the nut on the rear of the connector body.

It has been 4+ years since I have had this radio open and do not remember
(nor can I find in the construction manual) the most efficient, least
obtrusive method of gaining access to the rear of the connector.

All suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks, and Happy New Year to everyone.

de Milt, N5IA

Re: Question

Don Wilhelm-4
Milt,

The most direct way is to remove the right side panel.
You will find instructions to do that on page 26 of the KRX3
installation manual.  You will probably have to remove the KRX3 assembly
to gain access to the nuts holding the two regulators to the side panel.

Re: Question

Milt -- N5IA
OK Don.

That is what I had figured out but wanted to know if there was a simpler
method.  Yeah, the KRX3 has to come out to get at the regulator nuts.  They
are too tight between the KRX3 and the side panel to do otherwise.  That was
what had me stumped.  Didn't want to disturb them.  But, it is what it is.
Now to find the KRX3 manual.  Thanks, and Happy new Year.

I found the problem... There is a jumper inside the preamp that needs to be
removed when used with the K3 and the accessory connector.  I thought I
removed it when it arrived, but I guess my age is starting to show...

Re: K3 won't shut off?

In reply to this post by Dr. William J. Schmidt, II
I got in late on this thread but are you refuting to the PR6 preamp? That
was connected and not letting the K3 shut down because of it being connected
to the aux 12v connector on the rear of the K3?

If this was what was happening I just installed a PR6 on an ser # 5299 and
had no problems I "did not" do anything with a jumper inside. Even though I
don't have that problem do I need to do this?

I found the problem... There is a jumper inside the preamp that needs to be
removed when used with the K3 and the accessory connector.  I thought I
removed it when it arrived, but I guess my age is starting to show...

I would check inside the DE15 connector - maybe something is shorting pin 8
to ground inside there.

None of us are immune to ageing effects.
