Having a K3S, s/n 10169, early model, I've used a Shure SM-58 with great
results for SSB. I made my own cable for the mike to radio. I also
control the radio from the computer via USB while running 500 watts,
160M - 6M, and simply experience no RFi issues. No ferrites needed on
any cables, audio, USB, R73F, or otherwise. Not experienced external
applications changing the levels. Nor have I experienced any of the MS
updates causing issues with settings or drivers. No issues of MIC or
Line level changes when running SSB or digital modes.
I take all of the MS updates automatically, keep all applications up to
date, and I am very careful about loading any programs or applications
which claim to improve performance. And I make it a weekly routine of
cleaning and maintaining my computers. I find this to be a key to
reliable operation. I use CCleaner, paid version, to handle computer
maintenance and AVG, paid version, to handle virus and internet security.

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" I'm guessing that I'm not the
first to notice this on the K3S. I don't do much SSB but was active in
Sweepstakes this past weekend and noted that occasionally the audio
would go dead. Looking around I found that the MIC gain had dropped from
the usual (about 16) down to zero. I placed a toroid around the MIC
cable and this seemed to prevent the problem most (but not all) of the
time. The MIC cable (and the K3S) both sit next to an Alpha 87A amp. I
don't recall reading about this. Is some protective function being
activated?
