K4 Advantages of direct conversion

I've asked this sometime before but did not get any answer, I'll try
once more ... What are the advantages of direct conversion over a
superhet? I know "how" both work, my curiosity is, "What capabilities
drive a radio like a K4 to use direct conversion?
