KAT1 Install Troubles

Andy Engle
Hey Gang!

I finished my K1 this evening!  All seemed well until I went to install the ATU (KAT1).

During initial test (p.9), I put the ATU mode into F1.3 and then exit out.  I press WPM- & WPM+ to tune and the display reads P2.3 instead of the r8.5 that's expected. In the troubleshooting, guidance is to verify the orientation of U2 and D3.  I verified they are correct.  I also checked that D3 was still functional. I have checked and double-checked the solder work on U2, D3, and adjacent components.  All look to be okay with no obvious shorts.

During installation of the KAT1, instructions were to cut the trace on the bottom of the board and install RF-R4.  R4 was already installed in the space indicated by the silkscreen on the bottom of the board.  So, I cut the trace and removed the OLD RF-R4 and reinstalled it, bridging the trace I cut.  Is this correct?

If I put the ATU into TUN mode and exit, triggering tuning causes the relays to begin switching madly and never stopping.

Any thoughts as to how I can figure this out, please?  All help greatly appreciated!

Happy 4th to all!

Andy,

That trace cut was not to be done on a new K1 RF board.  You will have
to remove the resistors and capacitor and repair the trace cut with a
jumper wire.  Check page 7 - the "i in a triangle" informational item
near the bottom of the page - it says to skip the next 5 steps if your
board is new.

I believe 'undoing' those 5 steps will restore things to normal.

Andy Engle
As expected, you are absolutely correct!  I owe you ANOTHER one.

K1 #2897 is alive, thanks to W3FPR!
