KAT2 Lock washer Placement

Roger Marrotte
I'm nearing the end of construction for my KAT2.  I'm at the step on page 12
of the KAT2 rev. D manual that says:

"Secure the L-C board to the Control board standoffs using two 4-40 screws
and two #4 split lock washers. These lock washers go between the standoffs
and the PC board, not between the PC board and screws as on the control
board."

My question is this.  Just where do these lock washers go?  Page 6 of the
KAT2 rev. D manual has an illustration that clearly shows the lock washers
between the PC board and the standoffs. So that is what I did for the step
on page 6.

The last sentence in the quoted step from page 12 would seem to be in error
and is what is causing my confusion.  There's no illustration on page 12 for
this step.  One is told to put the lock washers between the standoffs and
the PC board as apposed to the way it was done on page 6.

It sure is a trivial point but I'd sure like to get it right.

Thanks,

Roger, W1EM

RE: KAT2 Lock washer Placement

Roger,

The bottom line is that you have to end up with one lockwasher between the
standoff and the board.  It matters not which end of the standoff that
occurs on - the lockwasher adds a bit more length to the standoff and it is
sometimes needed to assure adequate clearance for the board above the BNC
connectors.

There is one other consideration - and that relates to ease of assembly, it
is easier to put the lockwasher between the PC board and the standoff when
the standoff is first attached - harder to fish the lockwasher between the
board and the standoff on the 2nd end, but OTOH, the control board sits on
top, and is the most likely to be removed in the future for firmware changes
or other service, so the bast location for the lockwasher is between the L-C
board and the standoff, then on the control board the lockwasher can go
under the screw head.
