KAT3A & KIO3B Upgrade for my K3

Joseph M. Durnal
I had written up a nice couple of e-mails for the reflector asking about
upgrading my K3 with a KAT3A & KIO3B.  But I went ahead and clicked check
out.

I'm really looking forward to cutting down a bit on the boxes and wires on
my desk.  I couldn't think of a more expensive way of doing that!

I think my only regret will be that I'll still need my separate FSK
interface, yeah yeah, AFSK, but if Elecraft didn't want us to use FSK, they
wouldn't have put it in the radio.

Thanks & 73 de Joseph M. Durnal - NE3R

When I RTTY contest, I use a program that uses the CAT interface
over USB to send and receive RTTY. That way I have no extra
cables and am using the K3's RTTY encode/decode. I use RUMlogNG
on a Mac. I don't know of any software for other platforms, but
I assume it exists.

Using the CAT interface this way is great.  BUT you loose some decoding
ability.  I run a K3 in RTTY contests, TX is FSK RX is 3 decoders, the
K3 built in, mmtty and 2tone.  usually 2tone beats the other 2, with
mmtty sometimes winning.  The K3 decoder misses the most.  You might
want to try the audio from the USB codec to the computer and use some
software.  I forget the good one for the Mac, but I sure some Mac user
will know.

A very good idea Gordon. I do that with cocoaModem, which allows
me to decode the second receiver as well, allowing Single
Operator Two Receiver contesting. fldigi is also a possibility.
I'm currently in the process of trying to find a place for a
third monitor in my shack so I can have enough screen real
estate to display all of all the windows.

I don't think there is a lot of software that supports sending the FSK with
CAT commands.  Does anyone know of any others?

None that I know of.  FSK is not normally a CAT control nor is it done with “handshake” signals on standard serial port. It is passed on the TX line of a RS-232 serial connection to a discrete pin on a radio for FSK signaling. My K3 has such a pin on the Acc2 connector on the rear of the radio. My IC806MkIIg also hat an FSK pin on the 13 pin DIN connector. Other rigs are similar.

AFSK today is not what it used to be. Manufacturers have developed better TX and RX filters and I don’t really think you can tell the difference.

Re: KAT3A & KIO3B Upgrade for my K3

Bob McGraw - K4TAX
I've attempted to configure MMTTY to run FSK with my K3S.  Conclusion is that a Terminal unit will be required.  Using AFSK is easy and I don't find any disadvantages.   No additional hardware required.

Re: KAT3A & KIO3B Upgrade for my K3

Don Wilhelm
In reply to this post by Joseph M. Durnal
There is no access to FSK-D using CAT commands other than those
supplying ASCII strings.

FSK-D can transmit using paddle (not straight key) input, ASCII text,
the FSK pin on the ACC connector (with a one transistor keying
interface) or from the Terminal screen of K3 Utility.

I do not know of any software applications that support other than
keying the FSK pin (except for K3 Utility).

If you can deal with soundcards, AFSK-A is usually a better choice for
RTTY.  Many software applications support it.

If you want to use FSK-D, you will have to suffer with the extra cables,
and with the advent of the KIO3B interface, it is more difficult to use
the RTS or DTR RS-232 signals from the computer.  You might be able to
pick those signal off the RS-232 dongle that comes with the KIO3B, and
run it through the One Transistor keying interface to activate the ACC
connector pin, but if you have the P3 connected with the K3S and using
the P3YCBL, getting access to that RS-232 signal becomes more difficult.
A standard RS-232 "Y" cable may make it possible.

I bet the KEY macro in N1MM+ would work. Purely speculation on my part since I haven't tried it but it works fine for CW.

Re: KAT3A & KIO3B Upgrade for my K3

Joseph M. Durnal
KAT3A and KIO3B installed!  Had a scare as I couldn't remove the bottom
center screw on the right side panel, it started stripping.  I had this
issue on one of the front panel screws about a year ago when I was trying
to replace my VFO B encoder.  I was able to get the KAT3A installed without
completely removing the right side panel.

I should have spring for over night shipping, I was counting on the USPS to
get it to me by Friday, but the package didn't arrive until today.
Elecraft shipped it on Wednesday, but I guess since they aren't Amazon, the
USPS doesn't bend over backward for them.

The good news was while waiting for the K3 upgrades, I finally finished
soldering the K1.  That's been a 10 year odyssey, that I'll write about at
a later date.  I need to find the power cable I made up for it to finish
testing and to get it on the air.  That's what happens when you take over
10 years to build a kit.

Back on the subject, ahh, it is nice to have a little less clutter on the
desk.  The KAT3A tunes my antenna on all bands, even 160, which was a
shock!  Not that I'll be doing much down there with my indoor attic
antenna. I might buy one of the custom FSK interfaces, mine looks like
something between a spider and a plate of spaghetti.

Anyone in the market for an original K3 I/O board?

Re: KAT3A & KIO3B Upgrade for my K3

Don Wilhelm
Joseph,

Get yourself a *new* #1 phillips screwdriver (if your screwdriver tip
looks shiny, it is worn, throw it away).  If you are trying to use a #2
(the most common phillips), then get a #1. You may be wise to replace
the stripped screws.  Consider the Stainless Steel screw kit from
Elecraft - it may be less expensive than ordering the screws one by one.

Congratulations on finishing the K1.
