KAT500 + AUX Cable

NO! Do NOT use a 15 to 15 DE-15 with all wires connected! Or at your own risk...
You should only connect AUX, BND0-4, Key line and ground.
Get an AUX-Cable from Elecraft for maximum confort.
Y-Cables are NOT suitable for this purpose, as stated in a previous e-mail.
You must daisy chain K3 -> KAT500 -> KPA500 with TWO (original!) AUX cables.

If not, you'll have to send RF for both to tune. And sooner or later, you may inadvertently tune at 500 Watts...

Re: KAT500 + AUX Cable

Richard Ferch
I was not actually asking about which lines needed to be connected
within the cable, although that is another important aspect. I was
simply asking whether it is necessary to purchase two complete KPAK3AUX
cable sets. It seems to me that with two complete KPAK3AUX cable sets, I
would end up with at least one surplus Y-cable (assuming I need the
first one) and a surplus key line interrupter (or is it actually two;
i.e., does the KAT500 even need a separate interrupter?).

Stated otherwise, I'd like to know whether the only way to purchase (as
distinct from fabricate) the necessary additional 7-wire DE-15 to DE-15
cable is to order another complete KPAK3AUX cable set, or whether it is
possible to order the DE-15 to DE-15 cable on its own (on the assumption
that that is all I would need, of course).

Rich,

You would not want ANY keying line interrupters in a
K3->KAT500->KPA500 config. You're right that you'd have surplus parts
if you procured another KPAK3AUX kit. Maybe the cable will be made
available for individual purchase....

Alternatively, this cable ($4.02) appears to have all 15 pins
connected straight through:

It looks like it should work.

A cable with all 15 pins connected straight through (and not shorted
to the shield, or anything else) should work fine as the second cable,
from the KAT500 to the KPA500.

Iain,

I looked at the specs and I believe you have found a good one.  This is an
older VGA cable and the spec sheet shows as all pins straight through.  If
you are getting one, will you test and let us know?

Re: KAT500 + AUX Cable

Iain MacDonnell - N6ML-2
Hi Bill,

I hadn't planned to get one (I made my own cables for both KPA and
KAT500), but if I do find myself ordering from Cable Wholesale, I'll
include one of these and try it out. I've had good experience with the
company in the past - including the HD15 splitter that many are now
using on their K3s.
