Is the KAT500 hefty enough such that the KPA500 can be placed on top of it?

I was kind of hoping it would be in a small box with the same height like
the k3, P3, & KPA500 so they could all be lined up in uniform together but I see that won't happen. That would really look nice. Takes too much deskspace, Jim.
As Eric or Wayne noted a few weeks ago it was designed to sit on top of the KPA500 (or K3 for that matter, same footprint). Ventilation will be no problem with this positioning, they took care of that. I think the KAT500 may be sturdy enough for the KPA500 to sit on top of it,
but I am a bit nervous about interrupting the air flow around the amp. I think, during my recent discussion with Eric, he suggested it be set on, or under, the K3. Airflow is important there too, but not as critical perhaps. If you set it on top of the K3 you block the speaker, so I'm contemplating putting it under the K3. The KAT500 has the same dimensions as either the K3 or the KPA500--it's just not as high. I'd bet there will be a lot of variations on setup, and hopefully several of them will be satisfactory. The KPA500 draws in air from the top, and exhausts it out the back. So
placing the KAT500 under the amplifier shouldn't affect KPA500 air flow. Good to know, as I'm betting that the KAT500 is not going to weigh nearly as much as the KPA500! Placing it on top of the amp, with three fat RG-8 cables hanging out the back of it would (IMHO) tend to make the tuner susceptible to tipping backwards. Locating it under the K3 is not an option at my location, so an under-amp placement would be nice.
Wayne - any problem with interaction between the two if the tuner is placed under the amp? There should be no interaction issues between the KAT500 and the KPA500 when the KAT is under the amp. We also beefed up the KAT500 cabinet to handle the weight of the KPA500.
Also, placing it on top of the amp does not raise amp PA transistor temp significantly for most casual duty cycle use, typically raising it a few degrees. In some cases it will cause the amp's fan to move to a higher speed during TX. For higher intensity operation, with the ATU on top of the amp, key down 100% for several minutes the PA temp will raise 5-9 degrees above what its normal operating temp would be without the ATU on top. The fan will also operate at a higher speed. In our testing at normal room temps this was still well below the amp's max temp fault trigger point. But if you plan on RTTY or other high duty cycle modes with a lot of continuous RX time, especialy under higher ambient temp conditions, we recommend placing the KAT500 to the side or under the amp. Also, the amp protects itself from over temp situations with its soft and hard fault triggers. So feel free to try it out on top to see how it works under your typical operating conditions. 73, Eric www.elecraft.com _..._ On Mar 31, 2012, at 9:25 AM, Jim Bennett <[hidden email]> wrote: > Good to know, as I'm betting that the KAT500 is not going to weigh nearly as much as the KPA500! So the official word is that the KAT500 can be positioned either under, or
on top of, the KPA500. It can take the weight of the KPA500. That's good to have settled. Of course, now one needs to mull over what to do if you've had custom covers made by Rose Kopp or RadioDustCovers.com... Would you rather have the KAT500 peeking out from under the cover for the KPA500, or have the KPA500 look like it is wearing "high waters"? 8-) 73, Bruce, N1RX ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Now Rose can make covers for the various stacking set ups. Two items
protected by one cover. *Phil,
Withe bail in the up position and I imagine the light weight of the KAT-500 I wonder if the trick will be to place the KAT-500 on top either the K3 or KPA-500 and NOT have it slide off the back? I run portable everyday and bench top area is very limited so I am in a quandry as to how I can use the KAT-500. The dimensions appear to be the same as the footprint for the K3/KPA-500 so placing it 'under' either would mean it would protrude out the front? I am hoping there is a stiffener in the center of the KAT-500 or at least a sturdy outer frame that will allow positioning under either the K3 or KPA-500. Folks who have shelving as part of their shack are at a distinct advantage over the way i must operate and this would be nice to have but would be a real hassle for me to lug around...:-( Guess I will figure it all out when the KAT-500 arrives. but my concerns remain just that for now. 73's Gary * On 1 April 2012 02:06, Phil & Debbie Salas <[hidden email]> wrote: > The KPA500 draws in air from the top, and exhausts it out the back. I would not bet on the KAT500 being a lightweight. Those large toroid
cores are heavy. Certainly not as heavy as the KPA500, but not a lightweight either. The KAT100 had little brackets that could be placed so as to capture the rear feet of the K2, so maybe some similar bracket will be provided with the KAT500 to keep it from sliding back when mounted on top of a tiled KPA500. We will just have to wait and see. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/31/2012 8:04 PM, Gary Gregory wrote: > *Phil, > > Withe bail in the up position and I imagine the light weight of the KAT-500 > I wonder if the trick will be to place the KAT-500 on top either the K3 or > KPA-500 and NOT have it slide off the back? > > ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

The KAT500 uses steel panels for rigidity and extra weight. It won't
move around under normal circumstances. Wayne N6KR On Mar 31, 2012, at 5:12 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: > I would not bet on the KAT500 being a lightweight. Those large toroid > cores are heavy.
