KDVR3 Sound Quality Problem

dwines
Gang,

I installed a DVR3 recorder in my K3 a week or so ago and am very displeased with the quality of the recordings. There is a fluttering or motor-boating noise in the background that becomes louder with the recording of a voice. It is so bad that I will not put it out on the air. It is even worse when replaying a recording of a CW signal.

I have the lastest firmware versions installed, MCU 4.25, FPF 1.14, DSP1&2 2.71 and DVR 1.03.

I have tried recording with various settings for mike gain, compression, TX EQ, etc. but nothing seems to make a difference.

Before I go to the "Guys in Aptos" has anyone else on the list had a similar problem with the DVR?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Don

KDVR3 Sound Quality Problem

Johnny Siu
Hi Don,

I had the experience with KDVR3 in my past K3 and current K3.  Both did not
give problems like yours.  Before going back to the gentleman in elecraft
support, please just recheck your installation process, and tightening the
connectors etc.

The only difference between the old and new KDVR3 is that the former offered 15
sec recording time per message but the later only offered 10 sec recording time
per message.

cheers,

Johnny VR2XMC

Hello Don,
The KDVR3 will give faithful reproduction if you will clear your TXEQ of all settings and set them to zero.   Your TXEQ is in the circuit when you rebroadcast the off-the-air recording.  This means the rebroadcast signal is being shaped by whatever TXEQ settings you are using causing the signal to sound bad.  Hope this helps.  Roy Morris  W4WFB

I had this very problem. It appears to be a problem with the firmware version on the DVR board. A quick email to Elecraft support got my problem solved. I had to replace the board. Works great now!

Hope this helps!
