KFL1-4 wishes

Chris Kantarjiev K6DBG
Even though I'm sure that design work for the K1 is pretty far from almost everyone's mind...

I've got a new-to-me K1 (s/n 735) and it's got both 4-band (40/30/20/15) and 2-band (80/17) boards.
Those are pretty good combinations at a higher point in the solar cycle - but right now, I find that
40 dies in the early evening and I want to switch to 80. So I have to remove the KAT1 and band
module and swap and fiddle with the standoffs...

It sure would be nice to have a 4-band module that covers 80/40/30/20.

It also would be nice if those standoffs were threaded on one end - I'm probably going to make that
change.

Overall though, it's a really neat little radio!

FB on your band collection.  While I remember some at
ARRL HQ were trading 2-band modules back and forth
when the K1 was 'new' -- it wasnt designed for that
kinda band changing.  If you really want to qrp on
80m, maybe another QRP project is in order.  But no
kit single banders come to mind that will output 5w.
Or if you have a qro rig, crank the power down to qrp.
Or explore something homebrew.  The K1 does seem like
a nifty rig for portable operation, but sounds like
you enjoy yours from home.

Chris,

Sorry, but the Low Pass Filters are shared between 2 bands on the 4 band
board.  So 80 and 40 are not possible since 40 meters is the 2nd
harmonic of 80 meters.

You could change the 2 band board to an 80/40 board (or just buy a new
one) and save a lot of swaps.  The only problem with the overlap of the
two boards is that you will have to readjust the operating frequency for
40 meters for each board as it is installed, since the K1 only remembers
one setting for any one band, and there is certain to be a small
variation in the crystal frequencies between the two boards.

When the sunspots return you will not have to drop to 80 as often and
the 4 band board will likely be more useful.
