KPA1500 loose 3K Ohm/3 watt resistor

Dave wo2x
Hi All

Went to move the amp today and heard something loose in the PA deck on the
KPA1500. I removed the bottom cover to find a 3 K Ohm, 3 watt resistor
laying loose to the side of the PA board. There is indication that the
resistor has been heated. Checking the resistor with my Fluke 77 shows it is
still within tolerance.

Any ideas where this goes on the board? (PA/Filter/other)?

I've looked at the boards and cannot see where it came off. I also looked at
the pictures Elecraft submitted to the FCC and they do not show it.

Here's a link of a picture of the resistor.

Hoping someone can answer this in case Elecraft is off tomorrow for MLK Jr.
Holiday.

What doesn't work that used to work?  If nothing, then maybe they slipped it in there just to confuse you.   From the photo it looks as though it was cut out of whatever circuit it used to belong in.  I've heard of SMT components dropping of boards but it should be impossible for a properly installed wire ended component to fall off. ( I deliberately said wire ended rather than through hole because I still remember tag strip construction).

Hi Andy

The amp appears to be working properly.

The leads of the resistor look like they are bent at the end as if it was soldered to surface of the board and not through hole.

Will be interesting what comes out of this.

I suspect you are right.  I looked at the (perhaps intentionally) out of focus FCC photos and I see a wire ended resistor bridging surface mount pads in the lower left of the "Bottom View" image.   It does't look like your wandering part but it does seem to show that construction technique was used.
