You did not specify why you want an external mains switch. I have a 240v
surge protector in my electrical panel, it covers the whole house. John KK9A K7FD wrote: Is anyone in the US using a separate 220v external mains switch on their KPA500? I'm wondering where these are available. Or is anyone using a 220 v surge protector? Are these available for the NEMA 6-15 plug? I John
I run a remote and have for over 15 years, a lot of that with Amps like the KPA500. I really don't see a need for a surge protector when you have a real 'torroid' transformer. As for 220VAC switch, I use a 12v relay connected to my RemoteQTH server run by a RPI to turn off the 220AC if I need to. I do do this during the summer in thunderstorm season, but all winter, I never touch it at all. The Amps stays powered by 220VAC. Is there a reason you think you might need one? If you are worried about lightning, it won't help. Mike va3mw On Fri, Jan 18, 2019 at 11:53 AM [hidden email] <[hidden email]> wrote: > You did not specify why you want an external mains switch. Yes, lightning was a concern. Regarding an external mains switch, I read in the manual that circuitry remains ON for remote operation when the amp is off. I don't need the circuitry to be on. However...
...it sounds like I need not worry about either! Thanks! If lightning is the item of concern, there's bigger fish to fry in that
regard. Lightning protection is an entire other story and a very specific approach to lightning mitigation. I use the word "mitigation" to emphasize the point that all efforts for lightning protection is an effort to "minimize" the damage. Notice I didn't say eliminate the damage. Won't happen. I told a friend who had asked "how do I protect my equipment from lightning damage?". My answer; "put it in the box, seal the box, place the box under the bed and hope that a lightning strike isn't the cause for the the house to burn down". Come to think about it " do houses burn up, or do they burn down?" Guess it makes no difference. 73 Bob, K4TAX On 1/18/2019 11:25 AM, Macy monkeys wrote: > Yes, lightning was a concern.
