[KRC2] "No KRC2 found" error

Dave New, N8SBE
I've looked through the archives, and have not found a similar situation
to mine, so here goes:

1) I can re-download v1.5 firmware to the KRC2 without a hitch.

2) Every time I try to use the config utility, it first tells me 'v1.5'
firmware is loaded, then it tells me that 'No KRC2 found', with the
usual helpful information on setting baud rate, etc.

3) I've tried this will all the following connection hardware:

   a) Radio Shack "long white" USB-serial cable (this one has worked
with everything else I need for serial communication so far, including
K3 serial, LP-Bridge, etc. etc.) on a Windows XP Home laptop.
   b) Dynex DX-UBDB9 USB-serial cable (this uses the Prolific chip set,
and doesn't work, for instance, with my Icom-7000 memory programming
software, hence the reason I bought the Radio Shack cable on a
recommendation from the Icom software author) on a Windows XP Home
laptop.
   c) A real hardware serial port on a Windows XP Pro laptop.

I've tried setting 4800 bps, 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop, no handshaking
in the COM port property panel under the device manager, as well as
disabling the UART TX/RX FIFO.

Nothing seems to help.  I've spent several hours tinkering with this,
and have not been able to figure out why the downloader can talk to the
KRC2, and the config utility can report the firmware version, but then
balks at any further communication (attempted configuration downloads
fail, as well).

I've also tried pulling all the RS-232-related jumpers except W9 and W10
(RxD and TxD) but it didn't seem to make any difference.  Of course, the
D/L switch is set in the proper position.

Any ideas?  I'm at wit's end, and any help would be appreciated.

73,

Re: [KRC2] "No KRC2 found" error

I had the same problem using a Dell XP Pro desktop computer and a Belkin USB/Serial
adapter which worked fine with everything else, including the K3. I then tried a Win2K
laptop with a real serial port and it worked. Finally, I hooked the Belkin adapter to the
laptop and it worked there too!

I checked the port speed, etc. I'm afraid I don't know what to suggest except 'try a
different computer'.

Sorry you're having trouble, but I'm glad to know that it wasn't just me. At least you only spent several hours on it, I just finished days of messing with this and about a half-dozen back and forth emails with Gary at Elecraft.

There is a v1.6 firmware that I finally got to install, even though the downloader program never "found" the KRC2.  It took about three tries to get it to take and then the configuration program would find the KRC2 and allow reconfiguration, *if* I used a computer with a real serial port.

I could load the firmware with a USB->Serial adapter, but couldn't reconfigure the KRC2 with the same adapter. Go figure.

It can be be made to work but it's waaaay too difficult.

Thanks, folks, for the quick replies.  Kind of a bummer, but maybe if I
can get my hands on the v1.6 download, I can get it to work.  I planned
to use the KRC2 to drive an Ameritron "10L" head (has 3-of-8 encoding to
drive 8 outputs), so I wanted to use the AC1,AC2,AC3 outputs in a BCD
pattern.

This is the one remaining hurdle to getting a rebuilt 5-band two-element
spider-boom Gem Quad up in the air before the snows really start coming
down in SE Mich.  We missed all the fun the west side of the state had
the last couple of days, but I don't think my luck will hold out. 8-)
