#1204 is up and running without too much difficulty, other than the
builder making a "rosin joint" at one of the relays which was quickly
resolved. I made a few contacts up to 1500 miles away on 10 and 14 MHz,
using 1.5 watts (internal batteries) and a Barker & Williamson AC 1.8-30
broadband antenna. This antenna while a great 1.6-30 MHz antenna for
100-watts and higher, MARS, military and allband use- is probably 6 dB
down from a center-fed doublet or end-fed wire of similar shape... Still
beats a short mobile whip though. The audio with the adjustable
crystal filter sounds better than a comparison IC735 and an IC728, both
with "CW Narrow" filters. The 600-Hz offset and sidetone is a lot
easier for the ear and the brain to make out- compared to the 800-Hz
sidetones and offsets in the Icoms and some other models. Now, the
final part- choosing some good earbuds and a Pelican or other box for
briefcase/suitcase/glove-box.
