Mike,
I believe you may be counting the IC pins incorrectly.
Pin numbering on an IC starts with pin 1 - either a dot at pin 1 or with
a notch on the left end, pin 1 will be the leftmost pin toward you.
With pin 1 located at the left, closest to you, then count left to right
along the side closest to you (in the case of KX1 U1, the one on the
right next to you is pin 14) - now cross over to the pin directly across
from pin 14 (rightmost end of row away from you), and that will be pin
15 - the count continues from right to left on the side away from you.
