KX1 Excessive Power Out

John Porter-4
A few weekends ago (sweepstakes weekend) I broke out my KX1 in the
back yard to test and play with a few antennas I had been working on.
(Tnx Mike, KK5F-Multi-Band Dipole) The ATU in the KX1 tuned the dipole
beautifully with ~3.5-4 watts out. I then wanted to try the 24' piece of
wire & counterpoise 12-16' combination as I haven't had any luck with
this in the house or hotel rooms. The power out jumped up to 7 w as
measured on my OHR WM-2 ! Knowing that's not possible, I'm befuddled.
(is that a real word ?)
I know I saw this discussed several months ago on the reflector, so I
tried an archive search. I couldn't find this topic. Question: Does
anyone remember this and what the reason(s) were? Or, could someone
direct me to that subject in the archives please?
One more question please. Does anyone have a link to a source were I
might purchase a new MFJ-259 ant analyzer? I've been meaning to buy one
for several years and just kept putting it off. I usually bookmark this
sort of stuff when I come across it on this reflector, but darned if I
can find this link  that I also know has been beat to death on this
reflector before.
   Tnx for the help !

RE: KX1 Excessive Power Out

Ron D'Eau Claire-2
John, isn't the OHR WM2 an in-line wattmeter?

If so, do you have it connected to your KX1 antenna jack and to a good dummy
load?

If your 24 foot wire antenna is connected to the WM2 it will *not* show the
correct power. It requires a 50-ohm non-reactive load to read power
accurately, and the 24 foot wire won't provide that.

Remember, the ATU inside the KX1 does a good job of converting the impedance
at the antenna jack to something close to 50 ohm non-reactive for the KX1
transmitter final, but it does nothing to change the SWR seen at the antenna
jack.

For the antenna analyzer, you might try MFJ at: http://tinyurl.com/3tgrr
