The key to using a speaker for the KX1 is that it should provide a good impedance match with the KX1 output. I've found that the RadioShack model 19-318A works very well with the KX1 without any additional amplification. The only modification I made to the speaker was to add a shorter cable to save weight and to use a stereo plug so that both the tip and ring are wired in parallel. I like to use a speaker when I take the KX1 on a hiking trip so that I can keep the radio on while doing camp chores. That way I'm only tied to the rig when I'm actually transmitting. 73, Bruce Prior N7RR J. Apparently RadioShack no longer sells that little speaker. There is another lighter-weight alternative, but it requires 2 AAA cells, since it includes an amplifier circuit. This is a tiny no-name dual speaker designed for iPods which is sometimes available in the electronics section of drug stores. It sports an impudent integral 3.5 mm stereo plug which is easily dislodged, so it needs to be carefully protected inside a backpack. It works better with the KX1 if it's used with a short male-female 3.5 mm patch cord. The good news is that it costs about $10. 73, Bruce N7RR J.
