KX1 Tuning Direction?

Nigel-14
I was surprised to find on my recently completed KX1 that clockwise rotation
of the VFO knob Decreases the  frequency and moves Up the menu list.    Is
there a way to reverse this so that clockwise rotation Increases the
frequency?

Hi Nigel,

I'm not sure how to reverse the direction of the VFO when turning the
knob clockwise.  I can understand how that would be counterintuitive to
what you are used to on other radios.  I just completed my KX1, S/N
1644, and it seems to be clockwise = increase frequency.

Nigel,

Do you have the encoder mounted on the wrong side of the board?  Since all
the wiring is on the PC board, that is the only way I can think of to change
the encoder direction.

That is not normal - check to be certain you do not have a solder bridge or
unsoldered connection somewhere:  At the encoder Z1,RP3 or U1 pins 3 and 4.
Be certain you have a path with about 10k resistance between encoder pin 1
and U1 pin 3 and a similar path from encoder pin 3 to U1 pin 4.

I guess it is possible that you could have a bum decoder with the outputs
swapped internally, but I have not yet heard of such an occurrance.

Hi, Nigel!

I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but your KX1 was kitted with the
wrong type of encoder for the VFO control.  The normal type of encoder
has a blue body, the reverse type has a white body.  Lisa at Elecraft
has spent the last two weeks trying to contact all recent purchasers of
the KX1 kits to warn them of this error; apparently she did not find you
in time.

Please contact Scott in the Elecraft Parts Department,
[hidden email] or (831) 662-8345, and tell him you need a new blue
KX1 encoder; a new one will be shipped to you immediately.

You will need to remove the white encoder.  The easiest method to do
this is to use heavy duty wire cutters to clip the leads and mounting
tabs to remove the body of the encoder, then use conventional mmethods
to desolder the remaining leads.

Everyone at Elecraft apologizes to you for the inconvenience this is
causing you.

I don't know as I am not familiar with the KX1 but I presume they are using
an optical encoder to clock the frequency up and down.  Is there a
possibility that the encoder leads were installed in reverse ?

Thanks to everyone for your replies.

I guess by now you will have read Brian's email to see that a few kits went
out with reverse encoders (southern hemisphere models as one reply suggested
Hi Hi).

It sure feels funny tuning a radio in the reverse direction!

As usual, all at Elecraft have been great!!    They had already picked up
the problem and Lisa sent out emails on Jan 29th warning of the possibility
but for some reason I never received it.
