[KX1] Waterproof Carry Case

Mark J. Schreiner
I was at Walmart last night and browsing around, thinking of alternate
(ham radio) uses for normal household items.  I was wandering down the
housewares/kitchen aisles and I came across the Tupperware and related
containers.  Actually, I was specifically looking for something to use
as a project box for housing a matching network for an inverted-L, and I
purchased a pretty cool item for that, similar to as described below,
but a different size.   I am not sure that these are UV resistant, but
for the price that is okay.

Thinking a bit more about it last night and today I figured that they
also had another size that would be perfect for storing &
transporting/hiking with a KX1 (or other small portable rig, but
obviously of interest to KX1 users on this list).  So I stopped again
tonight and picked up the one I had in mind for the KX1.  With a bit of
foam rubber as cushioning around it this should be perfect, well, maybe
just slightly larger than ideal, but pretty close!  Actually, it would
have room for extra batteries, pencil, log, paddles, wire for antenna,
etc.  It is a 6.8 cup (8" x 5-1/2" x 2-1/4") clear plastic with a lid
that locks down on all four sides and has a silicone gasket that
provides for an airtight/watertight seal.  The brand name is Lock & Lock
(www.LockAndLockUSA.com although I didn't see the exact model on their
website) and for that size it was less than $3 (I thought it was about
$5.50 but I just looked at the receipt and it was less than $3).  They
sure are right that it is a Multi-Use Storage Container, with some
suggestions such as Tools & Art Supplies, School Supplies, First Aid
Items, Pet Supplies, Food, Dry Goods, etc.  However, the most applicable
for KX1 (et al) uses as described are Sporting, Fishing & Camping or
maybe Picnics at the Park, those activities sound close enough to hiking
on the Appalachian Trail or wherever your favorite hiking location is.
It is claimed to be Microwave Safe, so presumably it is safe for HF as
well.  It has a Manufacturer's Lifetime Warranty.  As a Polar Bear I
especially noted that it was Freezer Safe as well!  The plastic is
fairly thick, quite sturdy, much better than Tupperware or other similar
containers.

Just another alternative to the Pelican Cases.  If somebody else has
mentioned this item on the list in the past, sorry I missed it, but I
wanted to make sure others knew about this.  Get them while you can!

Mark, NK8Q
