KX1 - am I transmitting?

John Shadle
Just finished the KX1 this evening (yea!) and I ran into something
interesting as I got towards the end of the build.

I had forgotten to install C46 during part 2 (receiver construction) of
the assembly.

This didn't seem to affect reception at all, but I hope it didn't mean
that something was damaged in the meantime (read on...).

I finally put C46 in and everything seems to be fine. I tested the
receive capabilities this evening and tried to test transmit, but I'm
not sure if it's working or not.

I hooked up the KX1 to the DL1 (which was connected to my DMM) and keyed
up a few dits and dahs.

I didn't get any response on my DMM. I figured I would get a few V out
and that the DL1 would get warm. Nothing at all.

Boy, I feel really silly. I hope there's something really obvious that
I'm missing...because I just don't get it.

Thanks for all your help.

Re: KX1 - am I transmitting?

OK. So, I was able to get my question answered via the
[hidden email]. Here are the results.

It appears that it was T1 all the time. Richard (AD7FZ) was able to help
me out this morning, and for that I am most grateful! I checked voltages
of all the transistors and found low values during the "tun" function on
Q4 and Q5. I removed T1, re-wound it, and re-installed it...and voila!

I'm putting out 2.36w with 12.5V in. I think I will now install the
KX1PWRMODKIT. Looks like I need it. With 16V in, I get 3.5w out. I know
I will never have that much power...so I'm guessing switching R11 and
R30 will help things a bit.

I'll post more photos of the final testing this weekend. Hope to hear
you on the air with S/N 1601.
