KX1 and Solar Panel

WA3WSJ
Hello all,

I plan to conduct some tests. I have a small solar panel that puts out
50ma maximum. I'll connect it to my "pimped-out KX1" and see how it
charges the 11.8v Li-Poly Battery. More to come...

72,
Kangaroo Ed, WA3WSJ

Ed,

I'd be very cautious around Li-Poly batteries. From what I know, they require a very careful charging program. Most of them have temperature sensing and a special chip built-in that signals back to the charger. On the other hand, your panel is very low power so maybe it's OK. I really don't know, but I just want you to take caution.

  I wouldn't do it.
I am an AMA member and receive Model Aviation monthly.
I've read that Lithium Polymer batteries incorrectly
charged can burst into flames. Some model flyers charge
those batteries in a fireproof box or the domestic
fireplace even with a proper charger.
