Well, sort of, but the hotel was right opposite the historic Guzzi
factory in Mandello del Lario, on the Como lake in northern Italy.
For my first portable operation with the KX1 this past wednesday, I used
a 7m long wire hung from the window knob, going round a door frame and
ending on the bed. Unfortunately, given the severe thunderstorm going on
outside I did not feel like emulating Franklin and placing the antenna
in a better position.
Anyhow, with a measly 900mW, a 4:1 mismatch handled by the ATU and
really lousy wx... after much calling and searching I managed to "snarf"
a 229 from SP1XF on 30m. Not a dx by any stretch of imagination, but it
made my day and then some 8-)
Next step will be a better antenna (a portable loop, maybe) but for the
moment a big thank you is in order for the guys at Elecraft, for
producing such a wonderful portable rig.
