[KX3]2M Module

Robert Vargas (KP4Y)
Does anyone know if Elecraft plans to release the 2M module for the KX3 sometime in 2013? I have asked both Eric and Wayne that question on different email threads related to KX3 options, but no response has been received thus far. The 2M option had a lot of weight when I made the decision to buy the KX3 (sold a FT-897D to fund part of the purchased), and I would feel a little disappointed if I have to wait 2 years to enjoy that option.

73 and Best wishes in 2013,
Robert-KP4Y

Yes, after the KXPA100 and KXAT100 are released. Probably closer to Late Q2 as some of the same engineering team are working on both projects..

I personally don't know how you manage to get new products to market as
quick as you do. Most of all when you do so many new ones so close together.
I know structure and size have a lot to do with it but you seem to have them
down pat with very few glitches with the products.

It is definitely in the works. We'll be testing the second prototype

Any preliminary specs on the 2M module. All I can recall seeing is 3 watts output.. Will FM run at 3 watts or will power need to be reduced as in your transverters? What will be current requirement?

I can only second that. The announced built-in 2m module is a must for
me to complete the KX3 as a portable and mobile radio.
Anybody else? Maybe Eric and Wayne would reconsider the 100W priorities :-)

Much higher priority indeed.. I just ordered a KX3 today, and the 2m module is high on my list…
I don't care about having 100W… It's a QRP rig!

A number of external amps are already available in the market for QRP rigs if you want the 100W (e.g. TenTec model 418). Can we say the same about the internal 2M module?

I would have to agree with this one.  Plus I think it just makes more sense
to essentially complete the bulk of the "internal" options before offering
external options.

Guy's,

The external PA is about ready to go to the Field Testers so I doubt they
would stop work on it right now.

I have not read where the 2M module is 2 years away though?...seems kinda
long eh?

I must have missed something...again

Robert:

If one is looking <only> for the occasional higher power output, I have been
using a Tokyo Hy-Power 50w amplifier with my 12w K2 (and other QRP rigs) for
some time now.  Just half an S-unit (nominally) below 100w.  I don't know if
THP still makes the 50w amp, but I recall it as not being expensive at all.
And extremely reliable.

My two cents.

Cheers,  Alan  V31FA

Hey, who needs the Elecraft amplifier?  I have been using my Drake L-75
with the KX3.  Puts out well over 100W.  Of course, the 3-500Z filament
alone draws 5V at 14.5A, which is more than 3x the total power
consumption of the KX3 when transmitting...

Hey, who needs the Elecraft amplifier?  I have been using my Drake L-75 with
the KX3.  Puts out well over 100W.  Of course, the 3-500Z filament alone
draws 5V at 14.5A, which is more than 3x the total power consumption of the
KX3 when transmitting...

We're already testing the 2nd prototype of the 2-m module. I'll post
an update when we have hard data.

It's definitely still available. I bought one last week. I got mine from an
estate dealer (never used in the original sealed box) but HRO sells it as
well.
