Re: KX3 Beta 1.36 testing

Jim Sheldon
If there are any bugs I haven't found them yet.  Been really exercising my KX3 since Friday when the K3 decided to develop an RX problem.  Parts to repair it will be here tomorrow.  Main thing I miss not having the K3 running is the ability to check a band at a glance with the P3.  iSDR and my iPad work but there isn't room on the desk to set the iPad with everything else on it and I have the KX3 connected to the main computer for logging and use of the Griffin PowerMate tuning knob which works on the KX3 just as well as it does on the K3.

The only minor issue I've found is truncation of the first syllable of a DVR message.  Haven't figured out a way to smoothly play the first word of a ssb message.   Maybe I'll try a quick cough, followed by the message and maybe the cough will be all that gets dropped ;-)

[KX3] and RMS Express, Winlink.

Gil G.
Hello,

I am wondering if I really need a Signalink USB box to use RMS Express…?
Wouldn't just the audio input/output work?
Or, can the USB cable that comes with the KX3 for firmware updates be used?
Any suggestion would be appreciated, thanks,

Gil.

KB2NGK
You should be able to just use the the audio in/out cables and your
PC sound card.  Be careful however that your 'PC' sounds are not
also transmitted.

Gil,

You do not need a SignaLink box to use any data modes, including RMS
Express - just feed the audio in an out to the soundcard.
You may need a galvanic isolator (transformer) between the KX3 and the
soundcard to improve the signal to noise ratio and reduce "ground loops".
The audio level considerations are important.  Many laptop soundcards
have only mic level inputs and the KX3 headphone output level will
overdrive it without an attenuator.  Going the other way, the soundcard
Line out is at too high a level to directly drive the microphone input
of the KX3, so again an attenuator is required.

The advantage of using an interface device like the SignaLink (or
others) is that they do provide not only an external USB soundcard, but
also the galvanic isolation and the level conversion.

Hey Gil,

For WL2K and all data modes, just use Line In and Out to your sound device.  You can key the KX3 via the serial port, using DTR or RTS via the USB-Serial adapter.  Doing this requires a current-limiting resistor in series on the control line (DTR in my case).  I'm using 3.3K for mine, and it keys PTT just fine.

RMS Express allows a transceiver choice of "Elecraft Radios" in the Radio Setup.  I've got that choice selected, running in "Digital" mode (Digital USB).   There are two serial ports shown, one for control and the other for PTT.  I have two virtual ports (COM19, 20) running through LP Bridge, connected to COM3.  COM20 is used to key the KX3, and COM19 is used to control the radio (frequency, mainly).

Elecraft sells a cable set specifically for this type of use (KX3-PCKT).  The quality is better than average and the cost is only $20.

John Hendricks-2
I also use RMS Express with my KX3 using only a simple transformer/attenuator coupling. The only issue I have is with RMS Express not using the DATA mode with Winmor. I get tired of resetting the data mode every time it changes frequency.

I use A signallink with rms express and it works great. I use an apple and the sound interface is weird so i just use the signallink and usb interface to make think things easier.
