KX3 CW and Hand Key

I am requesting assistance with 2 issues:



1. I am attempting to connect a straight key to my KX3.  It has a mono 3.5 mm plug.  It will work plugged in half way. Is there any setting that will work with the mono plug inserted properly or do I need to rewire?



2.  I have tried following Fred Cady's directions for "Code Practice" on page 71 of the compact size of his KX3 guide.  I am not able to get any decoded characters to display (set to TX THR3) and pretty good sending with straight key,KXPD3 or external paddle . I can get some (unreliable) decoding of received sigs. Any suggestions?
