The KX3 manual has a very short discussion on the fact that it is possible to use a "standard PC Microphone" on the KX3. " You can also use some “mini” mics intended to plug directly into a laptop computer. Refer to the MIC BIAS and MIC BTN menu entries to set up the KX3 for use with your mic or headset." Has anyone gotten this to work?
I have a neat set of headphones with a boom mic that would be great for hikes. Would appreciate any advice. Have seen nothing on the reflector. I have spent some time looking and even did several searches. So if you know of an existing post even pointing to that would work. Rich, KE0X |

Yes, used several. Play with the settings and it'll work FB.

Has anyone gotten this to work? I haven't tried it with a KX3 because I don't have one yet. BUT -- almost any standard electret mic will work with a K3 and KX3 if the plug is wired properly, and nearly all computer headsets are electrets. Check the manual for instructions about wiring and menu settings. Nearly ten years ago, I bought what was probably a Plantronics salesman's sample kit of a half dozen different headsets designed for cell phones. I made up cable adapters for them and tried them with the ham rigs I owned at the time. All of the headsets (both mic and headphones) worked fine with and produced great, competitive audio on all of the rigs, but some were a lot more comfortable than others. A year or so ago, I bought some el cheapo computer headsets for use with Skype. I recorded them on my computer and listened to them, and I tried them with my K3. They weren''t very comfortable, the headphones didn't sound very good, but the mic sounded very good on the air. All I had to do was plug them in the rear panel (which is a 1/8-in TRS jack), select the rear panel jack, and turn on the bias. With the KX3, simply set the menu per the manual, plug the mic in, and you're good to go. 73, Jim K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

I've used a Plantronics PC headset with good results. You just have to set
up the mic gain and EQ and I have gotten good reports. I use a small flexible boom microphone (two for $4, shipped!) from Ebay, and it works great. Only used it once to test it. When I bought "Dragon, Naturally Speaking" I got a fairly decent stereo headset with a flexible boom microphone on it for use with their program. I upgraded the program and they sent me a second headset/mic combination. The same headset/mic you can get from a number of places for use with a PC or laptop. After I got my KX3, I decided to try it. Works very well and have had spontaneous reports of "Excellent Audio" using the same setup used for the MH3 hand mic. I left the TX EQ at factory settings.

HB9PJT and I made lots of tests with KX3 audio.
We tried a few headsets. The equalizer does not work as well as in K3 and signals with mediocre microphones were only slightly improved. HB9PJT got better results with Heil HC5. It seems that both the equalizer and processor in KX3 are work in progress. Wayne knows and Lyle will work on both when he has time. Ignacy, NO9E |
