Reading the list with respect to adding an internal mic - there is an easier option.
Take a 90 deg 4 pole mic plug and mount an electret insert inside.
Method
Open the plug cut the cable strain relief down to about 2.5mm 1/10 inch remaining from the end of the plug
Mount the electret insert behind this, inside of the plug.
Wire to ground and mic
Put a tiny piece of sponge in the end of the strain relief, close the plug.
You now have a miniature mic to use with VOX - it works !
You can turn the mic to the direction required and it takes the minimum of space, you can even leave installed ready to use.
