I owe the discovery to K3KO, who, while visiting me today and after seeing
the "failure" made the suggestion that I look at VFO-B in the KX3. I did
and found that it was set to PSK-D. VFO-A was in USB mode.
Now, the failure did not occur on 15 and 10, so I checked VFO-B on those
bands and found that it was set to CW mode.
This is happening with the N1MM configuration set to SO1V...
So the KX3 seems to be doing its "thing" okay; the problem appears in how
all that information coming
down the USB cable from the rig is being handled by the software.
