KX3 Fixed Ops

Eugene Balinski
There has been a flurry of questions about the KX3.  I do
not remember seeing this one.  Does anyone know if the KX3
will mount to the 100w PA/ATU to create a single unit for
fixed operation ?

Re: KX3 Fixed Ops

David Pratt
You'd be best buying a K3, Gene.  The KX3 lends itself particularly for
those interested in backpacking, portable or mobile use or for those
with restricted shack space. The K3 'K-line' is likely to remain
Elecraft's 'Rolls Royce' transceiver.  Doubtless there will be those who
advocate a 'KX-line' comprising a KX3, KXP3, KXPA1500, etc. but it is
unlikely to satisfy people on here who would like a bigger K3 more
suitable for their fat fingers.

The KX1 is a fine little rig but those without code competence will find
the KX3 better for backbacking, etc.

The KXPA100 is a separate stand-alone unit that does not mount on the KX3.

I have heard the suggestion from Wayne that the KX3 is designed to be a
super-compact user interface that sits on the operating desk, and the
100w PA/ATU can be anywhere, like under the desk.

If you've ever tried to figure out how to drag stuff for a DX trip on an
airline, you've got to love the design of this new radio system!  Those
you need a big boat on your operating desk are welcome to line up at the
TenYaeComWood booths. I'm FAR happier with the options that Elecraft
provides us.

Talk about dragging stuff for a DX trip -- W0YK travels several times a
year from SFO to Aruba with two K3s in Rose Copp cases as carry-ons and
uses them to set world records in RTTY contesting.

Re "the KX3 is designed to be a super-compact user interface that sits on the operating desk, and the

Hopefully, it will be remote-capable like at the base of your vertical out in the back yard, at the feedpoint of your attic or tower mounted dipole, etc.

And hopefully, it will be directly compatible with a K2/10 and K3/10.

Wishing and hoping...

Speaking of the KXPA100, I've not seen any information as to projected
size and weight of it.  Have I missed something (easy to do right now),
or is it still too early even for preliminary information?

It's about 3"H x 5"W x 9"L, and I'm checking the weight. QRX.

So, a KX3 and KXPA100 could both fit into a large "manpurse"/laptop bag,
for circumventing carry-on weight limitations!  Win!

 Wayne,

Do those dimensions and weight include the ATU option?

And, will the KXPA100/ATU be remote-able over some significant distance (attic/backyard) from the rig?

3/4" taller and another pound with the bolt-on KXAT100 ATU (roughly).
