Hi,
Wow, the number 1 spot! That's incredible. Congratulations. I am especially surprised and impressed by the phase noise performance. I had the impression that the synth in the KX3 wasn't that great for phase noise, being a DDS without a cleanup PLL. AB2TC - Knut

That's because Its not a DDS. :-)

Jim Brown wrote:
> Can you explain note "v?" Hi Jim, Footnote 'v' (on the 2-kHz IMD) actually refers to a measurement at a 1-kHz spacing, which is not part of the comparison table: v: At 1 kHz, performance is opposite-sideband rejection limited. As you know, a quadrature direct-conversion receiver (such as the KX3 or the Flex radios) depends on gain/phase balance to suppress the opposite-sideband signal. What Rob is referring to, here, is that when you do an IMDDR3 test at a very close offset (say 1 kHz), with the roofing filters enabled (i.e., using a zero I.F.), then the opposite- sideband signal might dominate the measurement. (This depends on the relationship between the interfering signal and the desired signal.) In his case this limited the measurement to an equivalent DR of 65 dB. Our main goal for the KX3 was to provide maximum portability yet all- band/all-mode coverage. If your goal is to get the absolute best DR at very close spacings, then the K3 would be the better choice, given its narrow crystal filters and nearly infinite opposite sideband rejection. I'll expand on this topic later. 73, Wayne N6KR ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Jim,
This is my understanding of note "v": The KX3 is a direct conversion architecture, and relies of the I & Q signals to cancel out opposite sideband. For this cancellation to work, the balance of amplitude and phase needs to be very precise, and it looks like Elecraft have managed to get the image to be 65dB down, which is very good. Based on the note "v" comment, it seems for the case of CW, this image will normally occur 1kHz away from the desired signal. If you have a close-in signal 1kHz away, then what you can do is enable 8kHz shift, which means the image is now 16 kHz away. Now the close-in dynamic range is 96dB, since the roofing filter can't be used with the 8kHz IF. Of course, if you are unlucky enough to have a strong signal 16kHz away (on the other side of your LO), then this signal will be down 65dB. 73, Matt VK2ACL On 11/08/2012, at 5:39 AM, Jim Brown <[hidden email]> wrote: > Great numbers! Eric,
I was under the impression the the KX3 would not perform as well as the K2, but would be a better trail radio with some gee whiz features. Looks like you guys over-achieved. We definitely have a few over achievers here.. ;-)
We had tested to these numbers in the lab, but had to wait until they were confirmed by independent testers.
