Hi all,
I've just had my new KX3 on air for the first time, but have been plagued by an extremely annoying noise when tuning. The noise is most obvious on 10 and 12m, but is audible down to at least 20; it sounds like a series of mushy clicks as I tune, and makes tuning quite unpleasant. Setting VFO NR on or RX SHFT to 8 both attenuate, but do not completely remove, the noise. Using them both does get rid of it, but is a non-starter for me; I should not have to accept losing dual-watch and filtering just in order to be able to tune quietly. Googling has turned up a lone post from Wayne in June this year but not much else. I'm interested to know what causes this, since none of the other radios I have or have used exhibit the problem. I'd also be very interested in any further suggestions for fixes! With regard to the VFO NR option, the manual states that it's a per-band setting that should be enabled only when required, but not much else. What's the trade-off? Presumably there is a good reason it isn't just enabled by default. Thansks for any information / suggestions! 73, -- Mike, M0PRL ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Hi Mark,
I've recognized this noise after running the KX3 for 2 month or so, made more than 400 QSOs before I noticed it. Now that I know it is there I'll always hear it ! I asked Elecraft support and they confirmed it exists. I measured the noise on 10mtrs using the built-in audio dbV feature - it says 11 dbV above noise (no antenna connected). Thats a bit too much I think. I'm also pretty sure that kind of noise wasn't as strong as now during all these QSOs I made before... Any ideas? 73 Gernot, DF5RF KX3 #1526 ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Rick,
with PREAMP off and AGC-Fast the noise is measured as follows (peak values), depending on band (quiet ) and antenna: on 10m, on a vertical: 1.1 dbV, on the beam: 1.8 dbV on 12m, on a vertical: 3 dbV, on the beam: 2 dbV on 12m, on a vertical: 2 dbV, on the beam: 1 dbV To get an idea how these values are related to S-points: S1 indicator on: ~3dbV S2 indicator on: ~6.5 dbV Which means if signals are well over S1 you won't hear the noise. However, the KX3 can well receive signals "on the edge", and then it becomes distracting. 73 Gernot DF5RF Am 02.12.2012 18:04, schrieb Rick Tavan N6XI: > What does it measure with an antenna connected? Hello,
I'm so glad Elecraft found the real cause of the tuning noise. Removed the pins today. In comparison to the measurements I took last year, absolutely nothing to hear with antenna connected. Same setup as described below. If I disconnect the antenna, the only band presenting very weak tuning noise to me is 10m, about 2 dbV according to the KX3-dbV display. While checking the noise, a weak ZA/IZ4JMA popped up on 10mtrs quite unexpectedly. Which I'd probably would not have spotted previously. 3 calls -> QSO. I'm happy! thanks/73 Gernot, DF5RF Am 02.12.2012 23:29, schrieb [hidden email]: > Rick, > with PREAMP off and AGC-Fast the noise is measured as follows (peak > values), depending on band (quiet ) and antenna: > on 10m, on a vertical: 1.1 dbV, on the beam: 1.8 dbV > on 12m, on a vertical: 3 dbV, on the beam: 2 dbV > on 12m, on a vertical: 2 dbV, on the beam: 1 dbV > To get an idea how these values are related to S-points: > S1 indicator on: ~3dbV > S2 indicator on: ~6.5 dbV > Which means if signals are well over S1 you won't hear the noise. > However, the KX3 can well receive signals "on the edge", and then it > becomes distracting. > 73 > Gernot > DF5RF > > > Am 02.12.2012 18:04, schrieb Rick Tavan N6XI: >> What does it measure with an antenna connected? Tuning noise is now absent without even an antenna or VFO NR on all but 10 meters so it is no longer an issue with me.
