I'm in the process of converting the Mac versions of the Elecraft Utilities from the Carbon API to Cocoa. I have completed the KX3 Utility conversion. The changes are extensive and almost every control in the application required some modification.
Advantages to using Cocoa:
1) Accessibility - The main motivation for the conversion is
to provide complete support for accessibility applications
used by the visually impaired (such as VoiceOver).
2) Better keyboard support - If desired, the program can now
be controlled entirely from the keyboard
without having to touch the mouse.
3) Appearance - Although subtle, the Cocoa controls
have a more Mac-centric appearance.
4) Apple has declared the Carbon APIs deprecated
in OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion (although Carbon apps will still run fine on Mountain Lion).
I need Mac users with a KX3 that are willing to do some *thorough* testing, including testing with VoiceOver, to contact me off list. I need all parts of the program tested. Once I get all of the kinks worked out of the KX3 Utility, I'll move on to converting the K3 Utility.
Thanks and 73!
David, W4SMT
