Re: Elecraft UPS deliveries

Doug Turnbull
Dear OMs and Yls,
I like UPS, their tracking is excellent but they do not always knock
when making a delivery and get a signature.    At 2:52 this afternoon, my
new KX3 was delivered to my brother's house in Connecticut.   I checked this
and called my brother who thought the package had not come but found it
outside his door when he looked.    He was home as was my nephew during the
delivery but the UPS man did not knock.    Tracking was superb but the final
step is sometimes not executed.    I have other friends in the USA who have
had similar difficulties with UPS.    Sometimes individual UPS drivers leave
very expensive parcels besides letter boxes on a busy road 150 yards from
the house.  This is not good enough with an expensive radio.   Buyer beware.

I do find that UPS tracking on international shipments is superb and
have never experienced a problem with them.   If one ships overseas by USPS
it seems the tracking stops at the USA border and then sometimes one can go
to the domestic postal service for the country involved and type in the
original tracking number and follow their parcel in their home country.
How one does with a parcel travelling between European countries, I do not
know.

                      73 Doug EI2CN

I see that you're in New York.

Welcome to my pain, if I order anything from the east coast and it
travels UPS Ground.
Fortunately, I'm two business days away from Elecraft, whether I specify
UPS or Priority Mail.
The advantage to Priority Mail is that there are Saturday deliveries, at
least for the time being.

Isn't Amazon Prime great?  After holding out for a long time, I recently
signed up.
No more waiting until I have $35 worth to order, to get the free
shipping (and then wait while they take their time to ship).
Case in point:  I ordered four ARRL books on the weekend.  Three are
here already (arrived yesterday) and the fourth, coming from Delaware,
should be here today, thanks to UPS Second-Day Air.
ARRL wants an exorbitant amount for shipping; even one book.

Re: Elecraft UPS deliveries

Jim Low man
In reply to this post by N8LP
Well, with UPS, delivery time is a crapshoot.
I've had normal UPS shipments arrive at the house anywhere from 10 AM up
to 8:30 PM.
In the latter case, I'm not even talking about the holiday season (it
was Halloween).
I had given up on that delivery, even though the status showed that it
was out for delivery, so we went out for dinner.
When we got home, I checked the delivery time on the UPS tracking site,
and it was approximately 8:30.
Today, I'm waiting for a delivery that was shipped via UPS Second-Day
Air.  Here it is 1430L, and no package yet.
To be fair, though, the delivery commitment is stated as "By End of Day."

Joining UPS My Choice is a good idea.  I can give them authorization, on
a one-time or a blanket basis, to leave any package that doesn't require
a signature.
While UPS deems the QTH to be in a safe delivery area, I have to admit
being a bit nervous about a nearly-$800 CrankIR antenna being delivered
when we were out for a while yesterday.
As luck would have it, though, we were both here when the truck pulled
up at about 3 PM.

I expressed surprise to someone at Elecraft that they ship high-value
packages without requiring a signature, but that was explained to my
satisfaction.

Re: Elecraft UPS deliveries

Don Wilhelm-4
My UPS delivery time is normally quite consistent - between 12 and 12:30
- so if we go out to lunch and errands (which is most every day) we will
not be home when the UPS man arrives.
Fortunately, I have a waiver of signature and release on file, thanks to
UPS MyChoice, so the driver leaves the parcels at the front door.
There are times when the sender has explicitly required a signature, and
that can cause a delay in delivery.
For USPS, the normal carrier and I have a similar arrangement - he also
delivers in the 12 to 12:30 timeframe.  There are pre-signed delivery
slips in the mailbox, and he leaves anything that cannot fit in the
mailbox at the front door.

I have not been able to make similar arrangements with FedEx, so
customers requiring a signature might encounter a day or two delay, but
they do not deliver on any regular schedule.

I have between 3 and 8 parcel deliveries every week, so I do have more
experience than most.  Yes, different areas may not be the same as I
encounter, but both the UPS man and the USPS carrier know me well.

This is one area where FedEx shines.

One time that I ordered (not necessarily from Elecraft) the shipper got
the package out the same day, and it was due to arrive when we were on
vacation.
I was able to go online and request that the package be held at the
nearest FedEx Office location, which is about six miles from home. No
extra charge.
This location is open seven days a week, so no problem getting the
package, even on Sunday.

Re: Elecraft UPS deliveries

W7CS
In reply to this post by W2RMS
I try and use USPS when ever possible as they certainly need the
business !  We have a very friendly and obliging village PO, best
that I've ever used.  They don't delivery to my address either, as
it's probably not cost effective to go up a half mile of rutted dirt
road, but instead, they give me a free large sized PO box .  Their
Flat Rate, Priority service is both inexpensive (relative), with free
containers and quite fast.  The only problem is if my package doesn't
fit in my box or the lobby boxes are full, I have to pick up, only
when they are open.  Fortunately it's on my way when I need to go to town.

I found out that the UPS drivers are on contract and have to
periodically bid for their route.  I had one driver that became a
good friend, after I pulled him out when he slipped off of my icy
road.  He came to my door with 'good news' and 'bad news'.  "I have a
package for you, however I slipped off the road a quarter mile down
below !  Can you try and pull me back on the road, so I can deliver it ?"

UPS trailers on trains - the so-called "Z-trains" - run 7 days a week
and have the highest freight priority on Class I railroads - sometimes
to AMTRAK's chagrin.  (Railroad-fanning is my "other" hobby!)

Maybe this thread would better be moved to the United Parcel Service
list?  For all of us, shipping is what it is.  It matters where you live
on the planet, and it apparently matters where you live in relation to
the nearest public road.  Elecraft, like all the other online stores we
all visit, offer a variety of shipping options.  You get to pick, how
much better and more capitalistic could that be? :-))

I have no idea who our UPS drivers are, nor the USPS or FedEx.  I'm
without color vision, honestly they all look alike to me.  Well, not the
trucks. :-)

The same problem with FedEx at their "FedEx Stores" (used to be called
Kinko's).  If you miss the afternoon pickup it sits there until the next
pickup which can be over the weekend.

Fw: Elecraft UPS deliveries

Elecraft mailing list
In reply to this post by Bill Turner

I have to agree (that is should stay here)

I like Elecraft and have swayed a number of people to them, but getting a ordered product
shipped to me correctly and in a timely manner is part of that business relationship.

I work hard to earn the money I spend with Elecraft.
That money represents the fruits of my labors, when I spend it with Elecraft
I'm trusting them to process my orders in a very timely and correct manner.

I tend to use Priority Mail it is the most cost effective and allows me to spend more with Elecraft.

(I would like to see Elecraft use more Flat rate shipping since it's typically cheaper than the current rates)

Re: Fw: Elecraft UPS deliveries

Elecraft mailing list

I was responding Not to the original poster but to the one (Bill) saying the thread should stay right where it is.

As for the "Moaning and Griping" as you put it.....

I personally have had in my last three orders missing parts, and one was sent to the wrong address; Is this normal?

Now Please Note: I'm Still waiting for the missing parts, they were going to overnight them,
but I told them it was not that big of a rush (I guess I should have accepted the overnight).

Oh and BTW, the package I just got today... Yea It's also missing a part.

Am I just supposed to accept it as the norm?
