KX3 speaker grille

Hi all,

Some KX3 owners have reported issues with the internal speaker. During
our search for the cause, we found that the fabric grille could
vibrate if the volume was very high, so we started removing the grilles.

But based on a month's worth of field reports and our own further
testing, we've concluded that in nearly all cases, edge-to-edge
contact between the top and bottom covers is to blame, not the grille.
As long as the grille is not creased and is kept flat when the speaker
screws are tightened, it should stay out of contact range of the
speaker cone.

We're taking steps to correct the case issues (see recent posts on
this topic). As for the grille, we've decided to put it back in, both
in factory-assembled units and in the kit instructions. The grille has
some utility in keeping out dirt, etc.

If your grille was removed and you'd like to put one back in, we'll
send you a new gasket/grille assembly at no charge. The installation
is pretty easy and should only take a few minutes.

My apologies for any convenience.

Wayne,

Glad to hear it. This was my gut feeling when I got my kit, and I decided
not to follow that part of the assembly guide and leave the grille in
place. Now I'm glad I did! I'll follow whatever recommendations you come up
with for the remaining vibrations, but on my unit it's not much of an
issue, and only occurs at a very narrow range of frequencies.

I hope you'll be doing similar research as to the possible cause of the
KXPD3 issues, and I'm going to hold off trying any radical mods until I get
some conclusions from your end.

Thanks for your patience, Thomas. Nothing is ever quite perfect the
first time around....

As for the KXPD3, I'm experimenting with different set screws for the
contacts. But you don't need to wait for me: several customers have
applied a rounded point to their existing set screws with excellent
results.

Re: [KX3] KX3 speaker grille

Thomas Horsten
Quite right, but the KX3 could have 10 times more bugs and would still be
the coolest gadget I've ever bought. I am positively in love with this rig.
You've done a great job, don't let these small issues dampen your pride,
they are very minor when viewed in the big picture!

The only way to do something 100% perfectly is to do nothing at all.
