I tool my KX3 to Belgium from Charlotte around Christmas 2013 - no issues.  It was in Roses bag with a Hardrock amp

Greetings,

I've taken my kx3 and accessories (mp 1 antenna, coax, radial wires, mfj
telescoping whip, signal link USB, various cables etc etc) as carry on in a
pelican case several times. As others have stated, TSA hasn't even blinked
an eye at me. They were more concerned with the medallion and chain that I
left around my neck.

Enjoy and safe travels.

One would have to question the intelligence of an attorney who would do such a
thing.

Has anyone checked their K3 into baggage check in? I have a larger pelican case that has additional accessories. Any bad experiences checking ham radio equipment in?

Not ham equipment but seven years ago (the last time I flew) I packed a
CPAP (breathing assistance machine) in a suitcase whose tag clearly said
MEDICAL EQUIPMENT and it went through checked luggage in several
countries with no problems even though the x-ray showed motors and wires
and circuit boards.

Re: KX3 through TSA Security ?

Ed Tanton
EVERY time since there's been a TSA I have always had 3 or more chargers,
etc. & cables in my carry-on, and have NEVER had them look inside.

By the way, the last trip my wife and I took, on the return portion, all of
a sudden we were preferred or prequalified-or whatever it's called, and got
to go through a separate and VERY minimal line, with no shoe removal nor
pocket emptying. 3 minutes tops. Awesome!

I make several trip a year through security with my K3 station. Radio,
laptop, PS, keyer, and all of the accessories, in carry on baggage. The only
consistency is how inconsistent the TSA is in checking bags. The only
constant that I have found is that the less time I have to catch my flight,
the more likely TSA is make me unpack everything!

Re: KX3 through TSA Security ?

Bill Frantz
In reply to this post by Keith Heimbold
I regularly travel to New Hampshire with radio equipment in my
checked luggage. The radio is a Small Wonder Labs PSK-20 which
is quite small, but then there is the SignaLink, a 2 element 20M
wire beam, power supply, connecting cables etc.

The bag is inspected about 60% of the time as shown by the "TSA
love notes". Other than an inspection notice, I haven't had any problems.

I also usually carry on a HT in a Pelican case for communication
with my airport ride. I have had them open the case, so I have
to repack it, but no other problems.

TSA people appreciate being treated with politeness. They have
NO sense of humor.

Re: KX3 through TSA Security ?

Lynn W. Taylor, WB6UUT
Sure they do, just make sure it has nothing to do with travel, security,
etc.

Coming home on my last pleasure trip, the TSA agent was making
conversation, and I said it was a great trip!

He said "too bad you have to go back to work."

I told him I'd been fired.

He said sorry, I said no big deal, my boss was an <expletive redacted>.

He said "I've had that problem."

I said "so you were self-employed too?"

He laughed out loud, and didn't flag me for extra security.

I think being polite, and treating them like a fellow human being goes a
long way.  Do what you can to make their job easier.

As an attorney here in Texas for 39 years, my experience has been that our profession is the most closely watched and disciplined of any I know.  It is hard to get to take the Texas Bar exam.  You need letters from everyone for whom you have worked recommending you, etc.  Last time I checked, Texas publicly disciplined and disbarred more attorneys than any other state on a % basis.  Is this harsh? Was your law school classmate treated unfairly?  I don't know, but don't play games at the airport in Texas even if you have a KX3.

Re: KX3 through TSA Security ?

Edward R Cole
In reply to this post by Phil Hystad-3
One thing you should know about flying on commercial airlines is that
they DO NOT guarantee any electronics that is in checked luggage.  I
had a kit stolen out of my luggage several years ago by airline
employees and I only got reimbursement because it was labeled an
enclosure and not electronics.  Always carry on your expensive ham
gear.  Doesn't make a difference as far as TSA inspection.

Most commercially made ham gear looks like some kind of cell phone
and is usually passed in the USA.  I have found great variance in
inspection by airport; generally tighter in small airports.  I always
carry my license and a business card attached to the radio.  Going
into Canada you want to bring along your invoice to prove it was
purchased in the US to get thru customs on return.  You need a
passport to travel to Canada these days.

I am planning to take my KX3 on my next trip.
