The KX3 will work fine with the KAT500 without disconnecting anything. If you have set the tuning solutions previously with the K3 it will automatically select the antenna and solution--but not autotune.
To use the KPA500 with the KX3 you must disconnect the Elecraft cable carrying band data or it will not bandswitch. I don'think this could be fixed in firmware but it would be really cool if it could.
I found it highly amusing to watch my KAT500 switching--and even autuning--with the fleet of boat anchors I used on straight key night.
