The smell of solder beacons! Finished K2 #5422
early summer. KXI looks interesting. But I have a couple of questions - Does the KXI portable transceiver - support an external speaker, for listening? Why would it be necessary to "hire another builder", to do the 80/30 option? Is it difficult to build or fit into the KX1? Or difficult to test? I like the idea that I could use the KX1 to also listen to some SSB and some SWL. Thanks, Fred N3CSY __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! I've never smelled a solder beacon (nor heard of one) but I know what you're
getting at. ;-) I built a KX1 for exactly the same reason. The KX1 has a headphone jack that would drive powered speakers like you use for your computer. The 30/80 options is, in my opinion, the hardest Elecraft kit to build and get right. It's far from impossible; it's just challenging. There is a trace to cut, two situations where pads on the board are mislabelled, and torroids that require fairly precise stripping to avoid bad contacts and shorts. One of the boards mounts fairly easily, but the other has to sit in a pretty tight location and has to be installed in such a way so as to avoid interfering with parts from the ATU. There is a wire that passes from one side of this board to the other and has a high probability of shorting against a pad that it passes right next to. There are also several parts that have to be removed from the main board (and one that is moved to the other side of the board) when you install the 30/80 kit. You'll want to have good solder removal capability for this part of the project. It can't be too bad -- I bought a second one to build for fun. :-) Craig NZ0R -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Fred (FL) Sent: Thursday, August 24, 2006 8:02 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] KXI Audio? Fred,
Good luck with your endeavor. The KX1 will work with an efficient external speaker. Check the archives for Wayne's Field Day 2006 operation comments - he did use an external speaker because he had a guest who wanted to hear what was going on. You certainly can install the KXB3080 yourself. The instructions are correct and careful to give all the information needed. Because of the tight physical space, my advice is to follow those instructions "to the letter" - wind the toroids, strip the leads and spread the turns exactly like the instructions and diagrams indicate. If you do not have a desoldering tool with a long slender tip on it, you may end up damaging adjacent parts during the removal process. In that case, I suggest crushing the component to be removed and removing one lead at a time. A stainless steel needle is handy for opening the holes after removing the old leads (just don't burn your fingers, the needle will get hot - glue it into the end of a dowel to serve as a handle). 73, Don W3FPR > -----Original Message----- > From: [hidden email] > [mailto:[hidden email]]On Behalf Of Fred (FL) > Sent: Thursday, August 24, 2006 9:02 AM > To: [hidden email] > Subject: [Elecraft] KXI Audio? > > > The smell of solder beacons!
