Keyboards revisited

Elecraft mailing list
Function keys continue to be a big big deal for contesting and I too am an OT stuck on the side
cluster muscle memory.  Does anyone know where we could get a USB stand alone cluster
of function keys that could be placed along side the regular or laptop keyboard?  Or, maybe ASCII programmable 12 F key cluster?

Look at the Logitech G13 game board and see if it might suit your needs. It
has 25 programmable keys, which should be plenty of CW macros.

Hi John:

You might want to take a look at he products from Genovation <http://www.genovation.com/
 >
They have a number of terminals in various sizes which can be had in
USB and RS-232 formats, which might do the job.  IIRC, they come with
software which will permit you to create your own macros for any
application.  The RS-232 can be connected directly to a K3/KX3, so it
can be used -without- an attached computer.

Some of the models from Genovation are RS-232

That means you should be able to hook them directly to the Ks (may require an adapter to get the pins correct)

X-Keys (www.xkeys.com) makes several styles of USB/serial keyboards and key
sticks.  They work both in windows & Linux/Unix environments.

John,
I'm in the computer business and have been for 30 years.  I have never
seen such a device.  However, using something like Arduino Leonardo
<http://arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoBoardLeonardo> one could easily create
such a thing using a common 3x4 keypad and a fairly small amount of
code.  There are probably other ways to remap a keyboard.  There are
numeric-only keyboards, but I don't know of any simple way to remap the
keys to something else.
