I worked in product development for many years at Hewlett Packard (and it's successor Agilent Technologies). HP/Agilent has a reputation for managing the product development process very well, but even there it was rare for a new product to actually ship on the originally scheduled date. Even though they always added some padding to the schedule to allow for unforeseen events, it never seemed to be enough. As Mr. Rumsfeld would put it, you can plan for the expected unexpected events, but not for the unexpected unexpected events. I heard they were waiting for a new shipment of pre-populated calendar boards. Might be as late as March 2013 -- 120 days or so later....

The newest discovery in the Mayan Calendar turmoil is that the end on
December 2012 was actually a printer's (stonecutter's) error. The work order specified February 2112, the 2000th anniversary of some neighborhood deity. The calendar was to be used as the patio center stone at the local Olive Garden, where the group had booked the entire restaurant for the festival. The data clerk and public relations staff at the office of StoneCutMaya, Inc, apologize abjectly for any concerns this may have caused. Further investigation by the local Chamber of Commerce revealed that the calendar was supposed to be done on a larger stone, which was not in stock, and would have been a six month backorder, and missed the festival. So the cutter got as far as he could with the stone in stock. StoneCutMaya, Inc, has had their Chamber of Commerce rating reduced to B- for all the furor, and for failing to inform the customer of the back order situation in time to place the order elsewhere on a properly sized stone. 73, Guy.
