Kit-building talk at Pacificon on Saturday, N6KR/WA6HHQ

Hi all,

Eric (WA6HHQ) and I will be presenting a talk on kit building at
Pacificon this Saturday from 2:30 to 4:45 PM in the Danville Room.
Since we have a generous time slot, we'll be covering several topics.

I'd also like to extend an invitation to other kit vendors or
manufacturers who may be in attendance. Bring your kits to show!

In the first hour, I'll be focusing on kits for first-time builders.
I'll have a number of kits, including some just-announced mini-modules.
To liven things up, I'll bring along a rig I designed 15 years ago --
the Safari 4 -- which is most definitely NOT a kit! There will be
plenty of time for Q & A on building techniques, test equipment,
soldering, leaded vs. surface-mount parts, etc.

In the second hour, Eric will show up with an armload of books that
we've both drawn on extensively over the years. He'll talk about where
each fits into a builder's library. After that, he'll talk about
receiver performance. He'll explain why the classic down-conversion
superhet architecture is used in nearly all of the world's most
expensive transceivers, *and* in our K2, which offers similar
capabilities to the kit builder.

Feel free to bring along something you've built -- kit or homebrew --
that may help us illustrate building techniques. There are always a
number of beginners present for this talk who could benefit from your
experience.

73,
Wayne
N6KR

Hi, Wayne--

Is the list of books on the Elecraft website (or can you
post it there)? I also have a little presentation on
kit-building that I give to local clubs and would love to
include that bibliography.

Hello Wayne and group,

It would be nice if someone could record (video?) Wayne & Eric's
presentatios and make it (or at least a transcription, such as NJQRP
does for Alanticon)) available( for a suitable fee) for us Eastcoasters
who can't attend Pacificon. I'd buy it. How about it Wayne?

New project kit

N8LP

I have developed a new project kit that should be of interest to
Elecrafters. It is an inexpensive, accurate digital dummy
load/wattmeter. It is patterned after the concept of the mini modules in
that it is board based with no cabinet, although it does come with an
aluminum base plate to avoid the chance of accidental shorts. Size-wise,
it will fit in an EC-1 or similar case if someone wanted to do a custom
installation.

It is microprocessor controlled, temperature compensated, and has a
large backlit LCD display with multiple calibration screens. Accurate
calibration requires only a DVM. It is rated at 20W, and uses metal
oxide resistors, but there will be a 120W option which will use thick
film power resistors mounted in a watertight cast aluminum case filled
with cooling oil. I am still running tests on this option. The larger
dummy load will replace the bottom plate when the 120W version is purchased.

I am posting this announcement because I want to determine the level of
interest before setting final pricing, based on parts volume. Please
email me off-list with "pre-orders" to help me determine volume. I am
also interested in any comments on the design that could be incorporated
before production boards are ordered.

For pics, specs and other details, see my website at
www.telepostinc.com, and click on the LP-200 link. Target price is $100,
and I should be ready to ship 20W units in about 2 weeks. I should have
a final decision on the 120W option at about that time as well.

Thanks and 73,
Larry N8LP

Very interesting Larry. I posted your website URL on a local ham
discussion forum. Your kit look very nicely built.

Excellent.

Re: New project kit

N8LP

Based on some of the questions I have been getting off-list, I have made
some changes to the webpage for my new kit, including return loss graphs
for the dummy loads. See www.telepostinc.com and click on the LP-200
link for the updated page.
